INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University extended their winning streak to seven matches with a 2-0 victory over Glenville State on Wednesday night, at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets improved to 10-2-2 overall and 9-1-1 in the Mountain East Conference, while Glenville State fell to 6-6-2 overall and 3-6-1 in conference play.
WVSU took the lead in the 29th minute when
Sandra Linares slotted home her team-leading 13th goal of the season, assisted by
Naomi Njeri. The Yellow Jackets added to their lead just before halftime with a 44th-minute strike from
Karissa Vela, set up by
Billie Jean Davies.
The Yellow Jackets controlled the match from start to finish, registering 29 shots, including 17 on target, while limiting the Pioneers to just 7 total shots. Glenville goalkeeper Lucia Lopez made 15 saves to keep the visitors in the game, but WVSU's relentless attack broke through twice. On the defensive end,
Laura Galindo recorded three saves to earn her latest clean sheet.
The match featured physical play, with Glenville's Aitana Viejo receiving a yellow card in the 87th minute. WVSU's defense remained disciplined throughout, preventing any significant chances for Glenville State.
