Volleyball sweeps Fairmont State on the back of 12 blocks

INSTITUTE, WV – West Virginia State (11-9, 6-1 MEC) swept Fairmont State (14-7, 4-2 MEC) in straight sets (25-22, 25-19, 25-18) on October 18, 2024, at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets were suffocating on defense, holding a team that was first in the conference in kills per set to well under their previous average of 13.73.

In the first set, both teams traded points early, with Fairmont State taking a narrow lead off seven kills. WVSU stayed within striking distance despite a .146 hitting percentage, with timely kills from Hannah Steele and Baby Moleni keeping the set tight. Defensive plays from Nicole Gart Custodio and Valencia Wilder disrupted Fairmont's offense, helping WVSU claw back to tie it late. The Yellow Jackets outlasted the Falcons down the stretch, scoring key points off service errors to win 25-22.

The second set was where WVSU took full control. Trailing early at 8-6, the Yellow Jackets exploded for a 10-point run, shifting the momentum entirely in their favor. Kiersten Eggleton directed the offense masterfully, dishing out assists to Steele, Wilder, and Moleni during the run. WVSU's defense continued to frustrate Fairmont, forcing the Falcons into nine attack errors and a .040 hitting percentage. Fairmont State clawed their way back with State holding set point at 24-16, but State held firm, eventually taking the set 25-19.

In the third set, WVSU closed the match in style, hitting a match-best .304. The offense was well-balanced, with Steele leading the way with 13 total kills, while Custodio added two of her seven total blocks in the final stretch. The Yellow Jackets' defense stayed sharp, holding Fairmont to a .149 hitting percentage and limiting their scoring opportunities. Eggleton finished the night with 40 assists and 12 digs, while Morgan Caba led the back row with 18 digs. WVSU capped the set 25-18, securing the sweep.

West Virginia State will return to action Saturday, Oct. 19 when they host Frostburg State at the Walker Convocation Center with first serve scheduled for 2:00 p.m.
