INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University rolled to a straight-sets victory over Frostburg State, 3-0 (25-10, 25-12, 25-16), on Saturday afternoon at the Walker Convocation Center. The win lifted the Yellow Jackets to 12-9 overall and 7-1 in the Mountain East Conference, while Frostburg dropped to 6-13 (0-7 MEC).
WVSU dominated every phase of the match, finishing with a .330 hitting percentage compared to Frostburg's negative hitting percentage (-.048).
Kiersten Eggleton ran the offense with 28 assists, 15 digs, and four kills on a .571 hitting percentage.
Hannah Steele led all players with 13 kills, hitting .480, and
Valencia Wilder added six kills along with four total blocks.
West Virginia State opened the match in dominant fashion, setting the tone early with a 7-1 run. Baby Moleni and Steele each notched kills. Frostburg State struggled to find a rhythm, committing several attack errors under the pressure of WVSU's front line.
Ashlynne Davis was instrumental during a service run that included two aces and multiple blocks from Wilder and Eggleton, extending the Yellow Jackets' lead to 15-5. Frostburg State called two timeouts but couldn't stop WVSU's momentum, as Wilder and Steele combined for more kills to push the lead further.
The set ended fittingly with WVSU's aggressive serving. Morgan Caba closed the set with bookending aces, giving the Yellow Jackets a commanding 25-10 victory to start the match on the right foot.
West Virginia State continued their dominant play in the second set, with Steele and Maureen Mathews leading the offense. After opening with a Steele kill from a set by Eggleton, WVSU built an early 3-0 lead, taking advantage of errors by Frostburg's Devin Brunk and Maya Johnson.
Ashlynne Davis recorded a service ace to maintain WVSU's momentum, but the Yellow Jackets also capitalized on their defense, with Wilder and Eggleton combining for a block. Despite a few service errors on both sides, WVSU pulled away as Eggleton delivered two consecutive aces to stretch the lead to 8-4.
The Bobcats called a timeout at 13-6, but it did little to stop WVSU's offensive surge. Steele and Mathews added timely kills, and Morgan Caba continued to pressure Frostburg State with another service ace. Moleni sealed the set at 25-12 with a powerful kill from Caba's set, closing another commanding frame for the Yellow Jackets.
West Virginia State sealed the sweep with a commanding 25-16 win in the third set. The Yellow Jackets controlled the net early with Moleni and Wilder combining for a block to open the scoring. Steele's offensive consistency shined, as she racked up several kills off precise sets from Kiersten Eggleton.
WVSU's defense also made a statement, forcing errors from Brunk and Brenna Siperko. Wilder contributed both at the service line, recording a timely ace, and on offense with powerful kills. Mathews added key points, including back-to-back kills midway through the set to extend the lead.
Despite Frostburg briefly closing the gap, the Yellow Jackets responded with solid blocking, led by Nicole Gartner Custodio, and more efficient setting from Caba. Steele secured the final two kills of the match, while Frostburg's Maya Johnson committed the deciding error, handing WVSU a 25-16 victory and the sweep.
State takes a week off and will be back in action on Friday, Oct. 25 for their final non-conference match of the regular season when they travel to Salem. First serve is scheduled for 7:00 p.m.
