Down goes #1: WVSU Women's Soccer hands Frostburg State first MEC loss of the season

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State University earned a 2-0 victory over Frostburg State University at Dickerson Stadium on Wednesday night. The win improved the Yellow Jackets to 8-2-2 overall and 8-1-1 in the Mountain East Conference (MEC), while the Bobcats dropped their first conference match of the season, falling to 9-2-1 overall and 7-1-1 in conference play.

WVSU took control early, with Sara París Fílter finding the net in the 6th minute off an assist from Billie Jean Davies. Frostburg responded with 13 total shots, 8 of which were on target, but goalkeeper Laura Galindo made 8 saves to keep the visitors off the scoreboard.

The Yellow Jackets doubled their lead in the 61st minute when Avril Amil Ruiz scored her third goal of the season, assisted by Ellise Rennie. WVSU fired 10 shots in total, 6 on target, and remained defensively sound, limiting Frostburg to just five shots in the second half.

Both teams were issued yellow cards, with Frostburg's Skylar Ehart booked in the 41st minute and WVSU's Maxima Bellscheidt in the 86th minute. Frostburg goalkeeper Katie Sterne made four saves but couldn't halt the Yellow Jackets' attack.

West Virginia State will next travel to face Salem University on Sunday, October 20, 2024, at The Bridge Sports Complex in Bridgeport.
