INSTITUTE, WV – West Virginia State (10-9, 5-1 MEC) suffered their first conference loss of the season, falling to Charleston (14-6, 4-2 MEC) in four sets (15-25, 21-25, 25-17, 11-25) on October 15, 2024, at the Walker Convocation Center. Despite a dominant third-set performance, the Yellow Jackets couldn't keep pace with Charleston's offensive firepower, dropping to 5-1 in Mountain East Conference play.
WVSU was led by Alyssa Hill, who recorded 12 kills and 1 block. Hannah Steele contributed 11 kills, while Valencia Wilder added 9 kills and 3 service aces. Setter Kiersten Eggleton posted 39 assists and 12 digs, facilitating the Yellow Jackets' offense. Defensively, Morgan Caba tallied 19 digs to anchor the backline.
Charleston took control of the first set, cruising to a 25-15 victory as West Virginia State struggled offensively, hitting .000 with 9 kills and 9 errors on 35 attempts. Charleston capitalized with a .414 hitting percentage, recording 14 kills and only 2 errors. In the second set, WVSU improved, but Charleston maintained the upper hand, winning 25-21. The Yellow Jackets showed more fight, hitting .286 with 11 kills, while Charleston remained efficient at .371 with 17 kills.
WVSU rallied in the third set, taking it 25-17. The Yellow Jackets delivered their best performance of the match, hitting .405 with 17 kills and just 2 errors, while Charleston faltered with a .143 hitting percentage. However, Charleston regrouped in the fourth set, dominating 25-11. WVSU's offense fell back, hitting only .050, as Charleston hit .406 with 13 kills to close out the match.
