Men's Basketball makes it four-straight wins at Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (10-5, 6-3 MEC) braved icy roads to take on West Virginia Wesleyan (1-15, 0-9 MEC) at the Rockefeller Center and came away with a 102-87 victory on Saturday evening. The Yellow Jackets shot over 50 percent from the floor and made 17 steals to win their fourth consecutive game.

Both Arthur Cox and Nate Mims recorded their first double-doubles of the season. Cox did so with 20 points and 10 rebounds while Mims accomplished the task with 15 points and 10 boards. Three other Yellow Jackets scored in double-figures including Kalil Camara (14 points), Mahzi Thames (12 points) and Kahari Rogers (11 points).

Wesleyan gained the early advantage by scoring seven unanswered to go up 7-2 after two-and-a-half minutes of action. The Bobcats bookended a three-pointer with a pair of layups.

State came back to tie the score at 13-all on the other side of the 16-minute mark. Arthur Cox scored all seven points, including a three-point play, on the 7-2 WVSU surge that evened things up.

The seesaw affair continued until the Yellow Jackets embarked on a massive run beginning around the 12-minute mark. They went on a 14-2 run that lasted just over three minutes. This time, Kalil Camara and Kahari Rogers led the charge with eight and five points respectively. Camara drained two shots from behind the arc and banked a layup during the stretch. State led by nine, 33-24, after Camara capped the run with his second trey.

WVSU extended its lead to as much as 13 points, 49-36, with 3:20 remaining in the opening half. The largest lead of the first half came on the heels of a 10-2 run in which four different Yellow Jackets contributed to the scoring effort.

The Bobcats were able to cut the deficit to seven points, 51-44, with less than two minutes until halftime. The single-digit deficit did not last long, however, as State was able to make two unanswered buckets to go into the break up by 11 points, 55-44.

The Yellow Jackets continued to pile on the points in the second half. They extended their lead to 20 points, 86-66, by the second commercial timeout. In the first 10 minutes of the second stanza, WVSU swiped six steals while shooting 44 percent from the field.

Scoring by State slowed over the next six minutes. The Yellow Jackets made just two buckets during the drought, but were still left with a comfortable 12-point lead, 90-78, with four or so minutes remaining.

Ricky Rollins knocked down a three-pointer coming out of the final media timeout to stifle Wesleyan's momentum. Another three-pointer, by DeAngelo Fogle this time, put WVSU over the century mark with less than a minute to play. One last layup by the Bobcats gave the game its final score, 102-87.

State will be looking to extend its win streak to five games when it hosts Glenville State on Wednesday, Jan. 24 at 7:30 p.m. next.
