Yellow Jackets win fifth game in a row versus Glenville

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State men's basketball (11-5, 7-3 MEC) won its fifth-consecutive game versus Glenville State (9-8, 5-5 MEC) by a final score of 113-89 on Wednesday night at the Walker Convocation Center. The Yellow Jackets moved squarely into third place in the MEC standings with the victory.

Miguel Martinez was the star of the show with a career-high 33 points. He shot 9-of-12 from three-point range. His nine three-pointers was also a career-high for the sophomore guard. Nate Mims also put on a show with a season-high 22 points. He made a season-high four treys. Meanwhile, Anthony Pittman nearly reached double-double numbers with 20 points and eight boards.

West Virginia State first pulled away from the Pioneers with a 17-2 run beginning around the 15-minute mark of the first half. The Yellow Jackets increased their lead from four points to 17 points, 32-15, by the end of the three-minute surge. Mims and Martinez fueled the surge with seven and six points respectively. Martinez knocked down a pair of threes while Mims hit one trey between a pair of jumpers.

Glenville State pulled back to within eight points, 36-28, on the other side of the eight-minute mark. The Pioneers were able to cut the deficit with a 13-4 run that lasted over four minutes.

WVSU took back control of the game after Glenville's run and finished the first half by outscoring the Pioneers by a 16-10 margin. Mims's step back trey with four seconds to go put West Virginia State up by 14 points, 52-38, at halftime.

The Yellow Jackets dominated in the opening five-and-a-half minutes of the second half. Arthur Cox set the tone with an emphatic dunk 20 seconds in before a 19-6 WVSU run ensued. Again, Martinez and Mims led the charge with seven and six points respectively. Martinez capped the run with another three-pointer that gave West Virginia State a commanding 27-point advantage, 71-44.

Martinez got hot and knocked down four more three-pointers over the next five minutes. The result of his hot streak was a titanic 90-55 lead for WVSU with 9:54 left in the contest. 

The Yellow Jackets turned on cruise control for the remainder of the game and eventually eclipsed 100 points when Antonito Carter drained a shot from behind the arc around the four-minute mark. They ended up scoring a season-high 113 points by the time the clock reached triple zeros.

WVSU shot over 50 percent from the floor and from behind the arc while holding onto the lead for 39 minutes.

State will make the short trip to crosstown rivals Charleston on Saturday, Jan. 27 next. Tip-off is set for 4 p.m.
