Ammy Mwasambu scores twice in shutout of Davis & Elkins

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – Laura Galindo's six saves in net, Esther Dhiramo's penalty conversion and Ammy Mwasambu's two late insurance goals helped State secure three more points in the Mountain East South against the Davis & Elkins Senators on Wednesday night at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets (3-3-0, 3-1-0 MEC) scored on half of their shots on goal, while D&E (0-5-1, 0-3-1 MEC) couldn't find the back of the net.

The Senators tested Laura Galindo three times in the first 12 minutes of the match, but she was up to the task each time.

In the 24th minute, Paula Herold chased down a long ball and passed it back to Elisse Rennie. Rennie crossed the ball into the penalty box to Dhiramo, but she was tripped by D&E's Aly Miller, earning a penalty. Dhiramo converted the spot kick down the five-hole, giving State the lead, 1-0.

Neither team got a shot on target for the rest of the half, but there were plenty of fouls called. In the first half alone, WVSU was whistled for 10 infractions, while Davis & Elkins was called for five.

In the second half, the temperature turned up to boiling with four yellow cards issued in the half. Delaney Day earned her card in the 57th minute. In the 64th minute, Dhiramo and D&E netminder Gabriela Acevedo got tangled up going for a 50:50 ball and each earned some plastic for their trouble. Yasmin Evans was issued a yellow card in the 82nd minute.

Naomi Waithira drove down the middle of the field just past midfield and put a through-ball right down broadway to Mwasambu who had snuck in behind the D&E defense and she went top-left corner to add some insurance for State in the 84th minute.

With under a minute to go, Galindo barely managed to get a dangerous ball to Alba Closa at the top of the WVSU penalty area. Closa found Herold who fired a ball 60 yards down field, just out of reach of a leaping Senator defender and found Mwasambu streaking past the defense for the second time. Mwasambu drilled a shot from 15 yards out in the bottom-right corner of the goal, 3-0 with 89:33 showing on the stadium clock.

Davis & Elkins took the kickoff, fired it out of touch and the horn went off before State could get the throw-in back into play.

Galindo earned her first shutout of the season, making all six saves necessary.

State heads to Charleston on Sunday, Sept. 24th for the first leg of the Kanawha River Derby. Kickoff at the Welch Athletic Complex on the UC campus is scheduled for 1 pm.
