Women's Soccer draws with UC thanks to late equalizer

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team (3-3-1, 3-1-1 MEC) drew with Charleston (5-0-2, 4-0-1 MEC) at the Welch Athletic Complex on Sunday afternoon. The crosstown rivals scored a goal apiece with the Yellow Jackets' goal coming in the second half and the Golden Eagles' goal scored in the first half.

The first half was a true midfield battle with both teams struggling to reach the final third. Each team only managed one shot in the first 45 minutes. Naomi Waithira was responsible for West Virginia State's sole chance in the seventh minute with a free kick that soared over the crossbar.

Charleston earned the only corner of the first half in the 32nd minute which was defended well by WVSU. In the 38th minute, the Golden Eagles broke through when Sophia Mankowski scored on a cross headed for the far post that was tipped by Laura Galindo and slipped into the side netting.

The score remained 1-0 in favor of UC at the halftime whistle despite both sides making efforts to push further up the field.

Both teams played a more attacking brand of soccer in the second half, taking four shots apiece. None of Charleston's shots were on target while the Yellow Jackets had two shots on goal in the second 45 minutes.

Maxima Bellscheidt came close to scoring in the 54th minute. She slid into a ball a few feet in front of goal but was denied by the opposing goalkeeper.

The next real chance for an equalizer came in the 81st minute. Naomi Waithira received a pass near midfield and sent it forward to Ammy Mwasambu near the top of the 18 yard box. Mwasambu dribbled around the charging goalkeeper and shot the ball into a wide open net, 1-1.

The Golden Eagles were unsuccessful in finding the target on the last two shots taken in the contest. A shot in the 86th minute and a free kick taken in the 89th minute both missed high to leave the score deadlocked after the full 90 minutes.

Mwasmabu scored her fourth goal of the season. Meanwhile, Waithira recorded her first assist of the year in her first start of the season.

WVSU will host Wheeling at 6 p.m. on Wednesday, Sept. 27 next.
