State controls possession and takes bevy of chances in 3-1 win over Wheeling

INSTITUTE, W.Va.-- The West Virginia State University women's soccer team (4-3-1, 4-1-1 MEC) defeated Wheeling (2-5-1, 0-4-1 MEC) by a final score of 3-1 on Wednesday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The game was tied at 1-apiece at the half before the Yellow Jackets scored two goals without a reply in the second 45 minutes.

The Yellow Jackets were in control during the first 45 minutes of play. They outshot Wheeling 16-3 in the first half. Nine of State's shots were on target while all three of Wheeling's shots threatened to find the net.

West Virginia State opened the scoring in the 14th minute. Midfielder Alba Closa laid the ball off to forward Esther Dhiramo who proceeded to curl a shot into the top left corner of goal from 20 yards out, 1-0.

Wheeling then equalized in the 29th minute. The Cardinals stole the ball off defender Maxima Bellscheidt with no one between her and goal. Goalkeeper Laura Galindo tried to intervene when the ball came loose but Wheeling's Talynn DeBartolo was able to get to it first and finish with a slow dribbler into the back of the net, 1-1.

Despite WVSU threatening to score for nearly the entire first 45, the score remained tied at the half with each side capitalizing on one chance.

The second half did not see a real chance until the 69th minute. That chance was taken advantage of by State's Sandra Linares. Paula Murcia took a shot that deflected off a Cardinal defender. Linares pounced on the deflected ball and used her left foot to finish in front of goal, 2-1.

A brace was added in the 74th minute. Kaylee Chandler sent the ball into the six-yard box from a corner kick. After the ball bounced around a bit, midfielder Yasmin Evans struck the ball with force into the top of the netting to give WVSU some cushion, 3-1.

The Yellow Jackets were even better at defending in the second half. They allowed another three shots to be taken by Wheeling in the last 45, but none of those shots were on target unlike the first half. The stellar defending done by WVSU in the waning moments of the game led to the Yellow Jackets holding onto their 3-1 lead at the final whistle.

The goals scored by Esther Dhiramo, Sandra Linares, and Yasmin Evans were their fourth, third, and second goals of the season respectively. Closa's assist was her fourth of the season while Chandler's assist was the first of her collegiate career.

West Virginia State will head to Fairmont State on Sunday, Oct. 1 for a 1 p.m. match next.
