Women’s soccer clips Fairmont State’s wings; secures first-ever win over Falcons

FAIRMONT, W.Va. – Yasmin Evans's first half goal made the difference in a 2-1 West Virginia State (5-3-1, 5-1-1 MEC) victory over the Fairmont State Fighting Falcons (3-5-1, 2-4 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Duval-Rosier Field. It was the first time in program history that West Virginia State took all three points against Fairmont State.

Renata Castellanos made her first career start to defend the Yellow Jackets goal.

Fairmont had controlled possession and the offensive opportunities early, but after Dhiramo was fouled in the 33rd minute, Alba Closa delivered a beauty into the box that Yasmin Evans popped up and headed it past the netminder to give State the 1-0 lead on State's first shot of the match.

State had another opportunity late in the first half when Maxima Bellscheidt placed a free kick right to a flying Elise Rennie down the right side of the field, but her hard angle shot was picked out of the air by the Falcon goalkeeper.

State maintained the one goal lead at the halftime whistle.

Esther Dhiramo's opening moments of the second half were rough. At midfield, she was fouled hard, earning said defender a yellow card. Then she got leveled in the penalty area with 40:46 left in the match. Dhiramo converted her second spot kick of the season and gave State the 2-0 lead.

In the 58th minute, Fairmont State had a set piece opportunity following a WVSU foul. Fairmont's Alejandro Puerta curled a shot toward the right post, but Castellanos made the diving save.

The aggressive play by State finally caught up with them in the 65th minute of the match when the referee called a foul against Delaney Day inside the WVSU penalty area and Ava Behr converted to cut the State lead in half. It was State's 16th foul of the match.

Fairmont State had another set-piece opportunity in the 86th minute after a foul was called on Bellscheidt 30 yards from goal.

The final minute of the match saw a flurry of activity from the Fighting Falcons, but just one shot came and it struck the left post.

Evans, Rennie, Day, and Dhiramo all had just one shot in the match. Castellanos made three saves in the WVSU net. The Yellow Jackets took four shots in the match, while Fairmont State took 17. All four of State's shots found their target, while just five of Fairmont's shots found the goal.

WVSU will play a non-conference match against Salem University on Wednesday, Oct. 4. Kickoff is scheduled for 5:00 pm in Bridgeport.
