Yellow Jackets set new school record in 11-goal shutout of Salem

BRIDGEPORT, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (6-3-1, 5-1-1 MEC) defeated Salem (0-7-1) by a final score of 11-0 at The Bridge Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The 11 goals scored by the Yellow Jackets set a new school record.

Sandra Linares opened the scoring in the first minute. She received a through ball and passed to Esther Dhiramo who gave the ball right back. Linares shot low and beat the diving goalkeeper, 1-0.

Dhiramo took four shots before scoring in the 14th minute. She slipped past the back line and had her initial shot blocked by the charging keeper. She then collected the rebound and passed the ball into a wide open net, 2-0.

Karissa Vela scored a third goal in the 21st minute. Linares weighted a pass nicely to her in the 18-yard box. Vela then chipped the keeper who came off her line, 3-0.

Two goals were added by State in quick succession in the 24th and 25th minutes. Linares passed to Dhiramo in the penalty area. Dhiramo then finished with a shot that bounced over the goalie on the ground and past the goal line, 4-0. Ellise Rennie scored next with a shot from an awkward angle off to the side of goal. The shot hit off the goalkeeper's hands and was deflected inside of her near post, 5-0.

Ammy Mwasambu scored the sixth goal of the first half in the 36th minute. Maria Amaral's shot leading up to the goal required a diving save by Salem's keeper. Mwasambu was there for the rebound and slotted a shot inside the left goal post, 6-0.

The Tigers had a player sent off for a foul coupled with offensive language in the 43rd minute. They took two shots in the first 45 minutes with only one being on target.

Dhiramo completed her hat trick in the 59th minute with a powerful shot that bested the goalie's effort on the attempted save, 7-0. She then tied her own school record for goals in a game in the 62nd minute. Linares lobbed a pass to her in the 18-yard box for an easy finish into the left side of the netting, 8-0.

Linares scored a goal in the 73rd minute to tie the single game team record for goals at WVSU. Ayana Lewis provided the cross that Linares was able to control before chipping the keeper from close range, 9-0.

Laura Gil's goal in the 76th minute broke the record. Kay-Lynn McCall sent the ball into the six-yard box from a corner kick for Gil to head into the back of the net, 10-0.

Mwasumbu tacked on an 11th goal less than two minutes later. She curled a shot into the back right corner of the goal from the top of the penalty area, 11-0.
