West Virginia State's second-half comeback against West Liberty falls short

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (6-4-1, 5-2-1 MEC) dropped a match to West Liberty (4-4-3, 3-3-2 MEC) by a final score of 2-1 on a chilly Sunday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium.

The Yellow Jackets looked like the better side through the opening 24 minutes of the game. They took five shots in that span, with three on target, compared to one taken by West Liberty that was saved by goalkeeper Renata Castellanos. Then, in the 25th minute, State took a corner kick that was punted upfield by the Hilltoppers. West Liberty's Isabella Aperfine sprinted to the ball, dodged a Yellow Jacket, and passed it on to Morgan Kost on the overlap. Kost ended up one-on-one with Castellanos and finished with a hard-driven shot, 1-0.

Not long after, Kost added a brace when she took a shot from 20 yards out that ricocheted off Castellanos' hands and landed in the back of the net, 2-0.

Forward Sandra Linares came close to scoring before the break when she headed a ball over the crossbar in the 36th minute. Her chance was the last good one taken by WVSU before the halftime break. The Yellow Jackets were subsequently left with a two-goal deficit to overcome in the second half.

State did finally break through 15 minutes into the second half. Maria Amaral lobbed a through ball to Ammy Mwasambu on a run. Mwasambu controlled it before skipping the ball over the charging keeper for her seventh goal of the season, 2-1.

The Yellow Jackets took three more chances in the remaining 30 minutes of the contest. None of those chances really threatened the opposing keeper and left WVSU down by a goal at the final whistle.

The match was a chippy one with 31 total fouls between the two sides. Two yellow cards were shown to the Yellow Jackets while one yellow card was handed out to the Hilltoppers.

State will face a tough road test next when they head to North Division leaders Frostburg State on Wednesday, Oct. 11 for a 7 p.m. match.
