WVSU battles for a draw at Frostburg after being outnumbered for majority of match

FROSTBURG, Md. – West Virginia State women's soccer (6-4-2, 5-2-2 MEC) earned a hard-fought goalless draw against Frostburg State (10-1-1, 7-1-1 MEC) on Wednesday night at Bobcat Stadium. WVSU was outnumbered for the majority of the match after a Yellow Jacket was sent off midway through the first half.

Forward Esther Dhiramo earned a penalty kick just 12 minutes into the first half. She was tripped by the opposing keeper's outstretched arm inside the 18-yard box. Dhiramo stepped up to take the kick and hammered a shot to the keeper's left. Frostburg's Ashley Bilger made a diving save to keep the Yellow Jackets off the scoreboard.

In the 23rd minute, the dynamics of the match changed when Dhiramo was shown a straight red card. She got tangled up with a Bobcat and booted her in the face as they both tumbled to the ground. State was left having to defend for the remaining 22 minutes of the opening half.

Goalkeeper Laura Galindo ended up facing 12 shots, with seven of them coming after the red card, in the first 45 minutes. She made six saves to keep the game scoreless going into halftime.

The Yellow Jackets played with everyone behind the ball except for a lone striker for the majority of the second half. They sporadically made efforts to get forward in the final 15 minutes or so, but kept their focus on defending while still outnumbered.

Forward Ammy Mwasambu took State's only chance of the second half in the 68th minute. She took the shot from distance and aimed it directly at the keeper for a routine save. Mwasambu had a few other chances to potentially score on long balls, but was unable to get any other shots off.

The Bobcats headed the ball into the back of the net off a corner with around six-and-a-half minutes to go, but the official's whistle blew prior to the corner kick being taken.

The official's whistle blew again at the end of 90 minutes with Galindo keeping her clean sheet. She faced a total of 32 shots and made 15 saves.

The Yellow Jackets put on a defensive masterclass to keep Frostburg from scoring after going a woman down with 67 minutes left to play.

WVSU will host Notre Dame College on Sunday, Oct. 15 for a 4 p.m. match next.
