Women's Soccer drops a match to Notre Dame College

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (6-5-2, 5-3-2 MEC) was defeated by Notre Dame College (7-3-3, 6-3-1 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium by a final score of 2-0. The Yellow Jackets conceded two goals in the first half and were unable to break down the Falcon defense in the second half.

NDC scored in the sixth minute of the match to take an early 1-0 lead. A shot bounced off the crossbar and landed at the feet of Notre Dame's Miriam Szijarto. She was left with an easy finish since goalkeeper Laura Galindo leaped for the potentially dangerous shot off the woodwork.

A second goal was scored by Szijarito in the 41st minute to create a 2-0 deficit for State. This time, she took a shot from around 20 yards out and slipped it under the crossbar to beat Galindo.

State's two shots taken in the first half came in the 22nd and 45th minutes. One was saved easily by the opposing keeper and the other went wide.

In the second half, WVSU chased the game while Notre Dame focused on maintaining possession. The Yellow Jackets did a better job getting forward and got off nine shots, including three that were on target.

In the 86th minute, Notre Dame's Hailee Smith was shown her second yellow card and was sent off. Paula Murcia, Paula Herold and Ellise Rennie each took a shot in the remaining four minutes. Herold's chance came from a free kick and missed a bit wide of the goalpost.

Rennie was State's best attacking threat in the match with four shots total and two shots on goal. Galindo made eight saves despite allowing two goals.

The Yellow Jackets will travel to Glenville State on Wednesday, Oct. 18 for a 7 p.m. match next. They defeated the Pioneers, 2-1, in the reverse fixture earlier this season.
