Yellow Jackets return to form with a road win at Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (7-5-2, 6-3-2 MEC) picked up an important road victory by a 1-0 scoreline at Glenville State (4-7-3, 2-7-2 MEC) on Wednesday night. The Yellow Jackets are now 12 points clear of the Pioneers in the MEC South Division standings with four games in hand, nearly assuring a postseason berth for WVSU.

The Pioneers were the aggressors out of the gates. They shot six times and lined up for two corner kicks in the opening 31 minutes of the contest. West Virginia State's only chance in that same span was a shot by forward Esther Dhiramo in the fourth minute that was saved by the opposing keeper.

Nevertheless, the only moment that really mattered in the first half occurred in the 37th minute. Captain Alba Closa dribbled into the 18-yard box and was fouled harshly to earn a penalty kick. She proceeded to drill a shot from the penalty spot into the bottom right corner of the net, 1-0. The lead remained for WVSU going into halftime.

Not much changed in the second half with Glenville continuing to aggressively search for a goal. The Yellow Jacket defense did not break down, however, and was up to the challenge of holding onto a one-goal lead.

Goalkeeper Laura Galindo faced seven shots in the second half and made three saves. In total, she faced 13 shots and made five saves to keep her third clean sheet of the season.

Midfielder Alba Closa's goal was her first of the season and only the second of her career.

West Virginia State will host the second place team in the South Division, Concord, this Sunday, Oct. 22 for a 6 p.m. match. A win for the Yellow Jackets will bring them within two points of catching the Mountain Lions in the South Division table.
