State closes the gap on Concord by taking all three points

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (8-5-2, 7-3-2 MEC) defeated Concord (9-4-2, 8-3-1 MEC) by a final score of 2-1 on Sunday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets clinched a MEC Tournament berth with the win while closing the gap between them and Concord to two points in the South Division standings.

West Virginia State opened the scoring in the 15th minute. Forward Esther Dhiramo drew a foul inside the 18-yard box to earn a penalty kick. She stepped up to the spot and had her shot saved by the opposing keeper diving to her right. Winger Sandra Linares was alert enough to follow up the shot and struck the ball with the outside of her foot into the far corner of the net, 1-0.

Just over two minutes later, the Yellow Jackets scored again. Midfielder Alba Closa received a bouncing pass from Kay-Lynn McCall. She flicked the ball around one Mountain Lion defender before doing the same to a second defender. Closa was left with open space between her and Concord's goalkeeper and slotted a shot low into the left side of goal, 2-0.

State stifled Concord's attack in the first half. The Mountain Lions only had two shots on target in the first 45 minutes which goalkeeper Laura Galindo had no issues dealing with.

Concord went for broke in the second half, taking 11 shots in an attempt to draw level with WVSU.

The Mountain Lions grew increasingly frustrated as the clock ticked on and were issued two separate yellow cards in the 69th and 71st minutes.

They pulled back within one goal in the 77th minute. They earned a free kick after a foul and placed the ball at the edge of the six-yard box from about 30 yards out. Defender Katie Garratt toed the ball as it hurtled towards goal to redirect it past Galindo, 2-1.

The pressure mounted on State's back line and Galindo in the remaining 13 minutes of the contest. They faced four shots and a corner kick in the waning moments of the match. The Yellow Jackets maintained their focus to gain maximum points at the final whistle.

Closa's goal turned out to be her second game-winner in two matches. Meanwhile, Linares scored her sixth goal of the season.

State will host West Virginia Wesleyan on Wednesday, Oct. 25 for a 6 p.m. match next.
