WVSU earns all three points with last-second goal against Wesleyan

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (9-5-2, 8-3-2 MEC) defeated West Virginia Wesleyan (2-13-1, 0-11-1 MEC) by a final score of 1-0 on Wednesday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets attacked relentlessly in the second half until they finally found the game-winner in the dying embers of the game.

Sandra Linares played a part in two goal-scoring opportunities early on in the match. She took a low shot that required the opposing keeper to dive to her left to save. Not even a minute later, Linares weighted a pass perfectly to Alba Closa on a run. Closa then tried to beat the keeper at her near post but was denied.

The only other chance for the Yellow Jackets in the first half came in the 41st minute. A long ball was played to Ammy Mwasambu. She was able to get a shot off with a defender on her hip that was saved routinely.

Wesleyan also took three chances that required saves in the first 45 minutes. Laura Galindo denied the Bobcats in the 10th, 24th and 33rd minutes to keep the score level at the break.

The second half was all West Virginia State. The Yellow Jackets spent almost the entire second 45 minutes in the attacking third of the pitch. They took 18 shots, eight of which required saves.

In contrast, the Bobcats spent almost the entire second half in defense. They only took two shots in the second 45 minutes which Galindo saved with ease.

The draw seemed inevitable even with State earning a free kick in the final minute. The free kick was not taken well, leaving even more doubt that the Yellow Jackets would find the winner. Delaney Day gathered the ball on the right edge of the 18-yard box and crossed it in front of goal. Maxima Bellscheidt then leaped into the air and knocked it down towards Esther Dhiramo. Dhiramo then blasted the ball into the top of the net for the game-winner with 30 seconds to go.

Dhiramo's goal was her 10th of the season and her third game-winner this year.

State will head to Davis & Elkins on Sunday, Oct. 29 for a 5 p.m. match next.
