Women's Soccer wins fourth-in-a-row; moves up to second place in MEC South Division

ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (10-5-2, 9-3-2 MEC) shutout Davis & Elkins (2-3-12, 1-11-2) while racking up five goals on Sunday night at Nuttall Field. The Yellow Jackets moved up to second place in the South Division standings by overtaking Concord who lost 3-0 to UC earlier in the day. They are currently on a four-match win streak.

Alba Closa scored twice in the game. She has now scored four goals in the last four matches. Esther Dhiramo, Maxima Bellscheidt and Ammy Mwasambu scored one goal each.Dhiramo's goal was her 11th of the season while Mwasambu's goal was her eighth. Bellscheidt's goal was the first of her career. Dhiramo, Sandra Linares and Paula Herold each provided an assist.

Laura Galindo earned her fifth clean sheet of the season. She faced nine shots from the Senators and made six saves.

The Yellow Jackets opened the scoring in the 21st minute. Linares timed a through ball to Dhiramo perfectly in order to avoid an offsides call. The back line was left frozen as Dhiramo ran past to collect the pass. She then chipped the charging keeper for the first goal of the match, 1-0.

Closa was next to score in the 37th minute. Herold took a shot that was swatted away by the opposing keeper. Closa then collected the rebound for an easy finish, 2-0.

State carried the two-goal advantage into the halftime break.

The first goal of the second half was scored in the 56th minute. Closa laid the ball off to Dhiramo before continuing on her run. Dhiramo fed the ball back to Closa who then split two D&E defenders before slotting a shot into the right side netting, 3-0.

The fourth goal scored by WVSU came in the 76th minute. Herold lined up for a corner on the right side of goal and sent in an inswinger with her left foot. Bellscheidt leapt above all the rest and knocked the ball into the back of the net with a strong header, 4-0.

The fifth and final goal of the game was scored in the 81st minute. Linares booted a ball upfield that deflected off a Senator. Mwasambu caught up to the ball and was left with an awkward angle towards goal. She shot towards the far post and was aided by a D&E defender who deflected the ball into her own goal as she was running back.

West Virginia State is on 29 points while Concord is on 28 points going into the final games to be played in the regular season. The Mountain Lions will head to Glenville State (11 points) while the Yellow Jackets will host rivals Charleston (40 points) this upcoming Wednesday, Nov. 1st. Those two games will decide who will secure the No. 2 seed in the South at the MEC Tournament. The No. 2 seed will have home field advantage and play the No. 3 seed in the North whereas the No. 3 seed will have to travel to Notre Dame College in the first round. The WVSU-UC match will take place at 6 p.m. under the lights of Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. Yellow Jacket seniors will be honored before the match.
