Yellow Jackets draw with No. 6 UC to cap regular season

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State women's soccer (10-5-3, 9-3-3 MEC) drew, 1-1, with No. 6 Charleston (15-0-3, 13-0-2) on Wednesday night at Lakin-Ray Field at Dickerson Stadium. The Yellow Jackets remain the only Mountain East Conference school to go unbeaten by the nationally-ranked Golden Eagles this season.

MEC Tournament seeding was on the line for State. WVSU dropped down to the No. 3 seed in the South Division after Concord defeated Glenville State, 2-0. The Yellow Jackets will have to travel to the No. 2 seed in the North Division, Notre Dame College, for the first round of the tournament now. The match is set for 1 p.m. on Sunday, Nov. 5th.

Charleston's Lina Jaime gave the Golden Eagles the lead in the ninth minute. Teammate Juliette Lucas found her at the top of the 18-yard box with a hard pass. Jaime stopped the ball and struck a shot on the turf that slipped just inside the right post, 1-0.

The Golden Eagles continued to threaten even after going up. They took three more shots before the 24th minute, all which required saves from goalkeeper Laura Galindo.

The Yellow Jackets then went on the attack with five shots and three corner kicks in a four-minute span. Paula Herold's and Sandra Linares's shots during that stretch both needed a denial by opposing keeper Jordan Maynard.

The intensity of the match died down in the remaining 18 minutes of the first half. Three more shots were taken by UC while WVSU took one. None of those shots threatened either netminder to leave the score at 1-0 in favor of Charleston at the half.

Three yellow cards were issued in the opening 21 minutes of the second half. The heated rivalry took on its true form as State searched for an equalizer while completely stifling Charleston's attack. Both Maxima Bellscheidt and Karissa Vela had their chances kept out by Maynard in the initial 15 minutes of the second stanza.

Then, in the 75th minute, forward Esther Dhiramo brought the home crowd to their feet with the goal of the season. From 15 yards out, near the football field's far sideline, she curled a shot beautifully into the left side of the netting, 1-1. Maynard leaped backwards hopelessly without being able to lay a finger on the perfectly struck ball.

A shot by Charleston's Hannah Goes hit the crossbar in the 82nd minute. One shot was then taken by each side in the final eight minutes, but neither came close to finding the net. The final whistle was blown with the score knotted at 1-apiece.

Dhiramo's goal was her 12th of the season and 22nd in her career. She was 1-of-6 Yellow Jackets honored before the match as part of the Senior Night ceremony. Yasmin Evans, Alba Closa, Paula Murcia, Riley Lohan, and Laura Gil were also honored for their commitment to West Virginia State.
