WVSU advances to semifinals with overtime victory at NDC; will head to UC on Wednesday

SOUTH EUCLID, Ohio – West Virginia State women's soccer (11-5-3, 9-3-3 MEC) came away with a 2-1 overtime victory over Notre Dame College (10-5-3, 9-4-1 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Mueller Field in the quarterfinals of the Mountain East Conference Tournament.

State advanced to the semifinals of the MEC Tournament, which will take place on Wednesday, Nov. 8, with the win. WVSU is matched up against rivals No. 6 Charleston. UC will host as the higher seed. The match is scheduled for a 4 p.m. start. Both meetings between the sides this season have ended in 1-1 draws. A winner must emerge in the postseason with overtime and penalty kicks in effect.

The Yellow Jackets nearly scored in the seventh minute. Sandra Linares headed a ball over the crossbar that was sent into the six-yard box from a corner kick.

They did end up scoring in the 12th minute to take an early lead. State earned a free kick about 25 yards away from goal. Three Yellow Jackets lined up over the ball. After a slight touch by Kay-Lynn McCall to give her a better angle, Paula Herold ran up and booted the ball inside the right post and past the diving keeper, 1-0.

The Falcons came close to equalizing in the 26th minute. Notre Dame's Miriam Szijarto had a chance directly in front of goal but missed it well high.

Laura Galindo made a nice save at her near post in the 38th minute. Madison Marino made a move inside the 18-yard box and struck a shot low that was headed for goal. Galindo dropped to her knees and deflected the shot wide.

No more shots were taken by either side for the remainder of the first half leaving WVSU up by a goal at the break.

The Falcons equalized five minutes into the second half. A high-arching shot was taken from distance that required a leaping save from Galindo. Szijarto collected the rebound and scored while Galindo was still recovering from the save, 1-1.

The next real goal-scoring opportunity did not come until the 78th minute. Following a corner kick, State's Maxima Bellscheidt headed a ball towards goal that was denied by the opposing keeper.

Regulation ended with neither team able to find a game-winning goal.

The Falcons had a well-taken shot punched over the crossbar by Galindo early in the first overtime period.

Then, in the 94th minute, Ammy Mwasambu gave the lead back to State. Following a NDC corner kick, the Yellow Jackets went on the counter attack. Esther Dhiramo received the ball as she sprinted towards midfield. Mwasambu overlapped her before Dhiramo laid off a through ball. Mwasambu was met by a charging goalkeeper, but she was unaffected and calmly passed the ball into an open net, 2-1.

Mwasambu nearly scored again in the closing seconds of the first overtime period, but had her shot pushed over the crossbar.

In the second overtime period, the Yellow Jackets defended well and did not allow a single shot to be taken by Notre Dame. The Falcons earned a corner kick in the 109th minute for their best chance to equalize. Galindo punched the inswinger away to preserve the win.

Galindo made five saves in the contest. Mwasambu's goal was her ninth of the season and her second game-winner. Herold's goal was her first of the year. Dhiramo and McCall were each credited with an assist.
