Yellow Jackets seize maximum points with late goal at Wesleyan

BUCKHANNON, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's soccer team (2-3, 2-1 MEC) traveled to West Virginia Wesleyan (1-3, 0-2 MEC) on Sunday afternoon and came away with a 2-1 victory thanks to a clutch goal in the dying embers of the game.

KEY PLAYERS
  • Forward Ammy Mwasambu scored the first goal of her career to win the game.
  • Forward Sandra Linares registered her first assist of the year on the game-winner.
  • Forward Esther Dhiramo scored her second goal of the season and 12th of her career.
  • Midfielder Alba Closa picked up her second assist of the season and fifth in her career.
HOW IT HAPPENED
  • The Bobcats opened the scoring in the 12th minute. Wesleyan's Ellie Pergolotti collected a loose ball  and sent it screaming into the top left corner of goal from 25 yards out, 1-0.
  • Esther Dhiramo received a through ball from Alba Closa in the 31st minute that set up the equalizer. The opposing goalkeeper rushed out to meet her before she calmly chipped a shot into the back of the net, 1-1.
  • By the end of the first half, WVSU had taken five shots while WVWC had taken three.
  • Both teams only had one shot on goal in the first 45 minutes and both shots on goal were successful at finding their target.
  • Both sides played to win in the second half with a combined 20 shots and 10 shots on goal almost evenly split between them.
  • The Yellow Jackets finally broke through in the 89th minute when Sandra Linares took the ball off a Bobcat defender to set up Ammy Mwasambu for an easy shot into the side netting.
