WVSU soccer edged by Concord

BECKLEY, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's soccer team took the drive down the West Virginia Turnpike for their first road conference game of the season and came up short against the Concord Mountain Lions, 2-1 on Wednesday at the Paul Cline YMCA Complex. The two teams were nearly equal on the stat sheet in all categories except for corner kicks. The Jackets surrendered nine corner kicks to Concord while only earning three themselves. Concord took just two extra shots and only one more shot on target, but that lone shot was the difference in the match.

Yasmin Evans scored her first goal of the season and the third of her collegiate career on her only shot. Laura Galindo made three saves in the match.

The first real action of the match came when the Mountain Lions lobbed a ball upfield that was mishandled by a Yellow Jacket defender in the eighth minute. Concord's Caitlin Webster made State pay for the mistake by stealing the ball and slotting a shot past Galindo who left her line to try to charge Webster, 1-0.

Galindo made a nice diving save in the 24th minute. Concord's Reeanna Cook lined up for a free kick in a favorable position and curled a shot towards the bottom of the left post that Galindo shoved wide.

In the 38th minute, WVSU tied the score thanks to an incredible shot from distance by midfielder Evans. She struck the ball with her first touch from around 40 yards out and arched it so that it slipped under the crossbar and over the fingertips of the Mountain Lion's goalkeeper.

Concord went back on top in the 43rd minute. A high cross into the 18 yard box was headed down by Webster and slipped between Galindo and the post, 2-1.

Forward Karissa Vela made one last attempt to score in the final seconds of the first half. She intercepted a pass and struck a shot well, but it was aimed directly at the goalie for an easy save. The score remained 2-1 in favor of CU going into the half.

The second half was a bit chippier compared to the first half with the two teams being assessed a combined 10 fouls compared to the seven fouls called in the first half. State was also hit with three yellow cards, one each to Ellise Rennie, Sandra Linares, and Paula Murcia. The scoreline remained unchanged in the second half and the Jackets fell to Concord on the road for the first time in two years.

West Virginia State will head to West Virginia Wesleyan next on Sunday, Sept. 17 for a 4 p.m. match.
