Women’s Soccer drops season opener at Ohio Dominican

COLUMBUS, Ohio – West Virginia State University's women's soccer team traveled to Ohio Dominican University for the 2023 season opener and dropped a 1-0 decision. WVSU's defense only allowed one shot on goal in the match while the offense fired off 14 shots in the match.

The first half of the match was a defensive one. Neither team managed a shot through the first twelve minutes. ODU took the first shot of the match in the 13th minute, but missed the pipes, wide left. Esther Dhiramo took the first WVSU shot, but it was blocked. The rebound found Karissa Vela who fired the ball towards goal. It found the target, but also found the ODU goalkeeper.

ODU found the goal in the 40th minute to break the stalemate on a shot from the top of the penalty area. The two teams went to the locker room with ODU holding onto a 1-0 lead.

State came out of the locker room and the offense went into overdrive, firing 12 shots at the ODU net-minder, four of which found the target. However, all four were turned away by the ODU goalkeeper. ODU did not get a shot off in the second half against Laura Galindo.

Vela, Dhiramo, and Sandra Linares all took three shots for State. Linares and Vela found the target two times each while Delaney Day had the other shot on target.

WVSU travels to Indianapolis for a mid-week match against the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds at noon on Wednesday, September 6th.
