Yellow Jacket soccer falls to Indianapolis late

INDIANAPOLIS – West Virginia State's women's soccer team fell to the University of Indianapolis Greyhounds on the road Wednesday afternoon. State (0-2, 0-0 MEC) took a 2-1 lead into the locker room, but an 58th minute equalizer and an 87th minute go-ahead goal by U-Indy (1-1-1, 0-0 GLVC) erased that lead.

State struck first in the eighth minute of the match when the Greyhound goalkeeper fumbled a clear attempt that got swept up by Karissa Vela. Vela pocketed the ball into the bottom left corner to tickle the twine and give State their first lead of the season.

U-Indy tied the match in the 22nd minute on a sharp shot that eluded a diving Laura Galindo.

In the 37th minute, Sandra Linares gathered a pass from Alba Closa and rocketed a shot into the opposite corner that Vela scored in to once again give State the one-goal lead. That lead stood until after halftime.

The Greyhounds gained a set-piece opportunity in the 58th minute and capitalized, tying the score. Just under 30 minutes later, the Greyhounds found a breakaway and put away the eventual game-winner. State didn't get a shot off for the rest of the match.

Vela and Linares had one goal each for State. Esther Dhiramo took three shots, two on target. Galindo faced 13 U-Indy shots and made three saves.

State opens up Mountain East Conference play on Sunday when they host Glenville State at Dickerson Stadium. Kick-off is scheduled for 6:00 pm.
