WVSU Softball drops seventh straight

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team dropped their sixth and seventh consecutive game of the season on Saturday afternoon against the Davis and Elkins Senators at Lady Jackets Field. A grand slam by the Senators ended the game in the fifth inning, while the Yellow Jackets were shutout in game two.

Game 1: Davis & Elkins 11, WVSU 3 (5 innings)
D&E jumped out to a 1-0 lead in the first inning. WVSU had runners aboard for Emma Pauley when she sent a 3-2 pitch into right field for an opposite field RBI base hit that scored Autumn Thompson. Chelsea Thompson then sent one into center field that was gathered up by the center fielder, but the she sailed it over the catcher's head and allowed Murphy and Chelsea Thompson to score, 3-1. 

D&E put a six-spot on the Yellow Jackets in the third inning with two doubles, two singles and a bases loaded walk.

State had the opportunity to trim the lead in the fourth with runners on second and third with one out but a short fly out and strikeout left them stranded. D&E hit a grand slam in the fifth inning to put the Jackets down by eight runs. The game ended early when State went down in order in the bottom half of the inning.

Emma Pauley hit 2-for-2 with an RBI. Kasey Murphy pitched two-plus innings and fanned one Senators hitter.

Game 2: Davis & Elkins 6, WVSU 0
D&E scored a run in the first and second innings, and two runs in the third. 

Emma Ruth hit a lead off single in the first but she was stranded at second. Emma Pauley led-off with a double in the second inning and was stranded at third. Kerrigan Moore reached on a lead-off error in the third but couldn't get closer than second base. Kasey Murphy hit a leadoff single in the fourth, but was doubled-off when Chelsea Thompson hit a hard grounder to the shortstop. Clarke Moore walked to open the fifth inning and got to third on a failed pickoff attempt that sent sailing over the first baseman's head followed by a Ruth groundout. She was stranded when Emele Clark recorded the third out on a groundout.

The Senators recorded two more runs in the seventh while the Yellow Jackets sat down in order in the sixth and the seventh.

State heads across the county to Charleston to conclude the suspended game earlier this season followed by their regularly scheduled doubleheader against the Golden Eagles on Wednesday, April 12.
