State comes up short to UC on long Wednesday night

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State softball (11-22, 5-15 MEC) came up short to Charleston (23-6, 17-3 MEC) on Wednesday night at UC Softball Field. The Yellow Jackets were edged, 3-2, in the continuation of a suspended game. They then dropped both games of the twinbill by final scores of 6-4 and 4-0.

Game 1: Charleston 3, West Virginia State 2, Final/8

The second game of the doubleheader played at Lady Jackets Field on Wednesday, March 29 was suspended in the bottom of the seventh due to a power outage. The game resumed today at UC Softball Field with the score tied at 2-2, no outs, and a 0-1 count on Clarke Moore. Three consecutive strikeouts by the Yellow Jackets sent the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, a single up the middle put the go-ahead run on base. A passed ball then put the go-ahead run on second base before a ground out moved it to third. Another single up the middle then scored the go-ahead run, 3-2.

In the bottom of the eighth, Emele Clark led off with a double to the gap in left center. She then advanced to third with a well-placed sacrifice bunt by Autumn Hall. Clark was left stranded at third after a strikeout, a strategic walk, and a ground out to end the game.

Game 2: Charleston 6, West Virginia State 4, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets nearly came back to win the first game of the doubleheader after a rough start, but came up short in the end. The Golden Eagles scored all six of their runs, two of which were unearned, in the first three innings. Home runs in the first and second innings resulted in three runs for UC, 3-0. Then two errors allowed two unearned runs to score in the third inning before a ground out scored a third run, 6-0.

State ended the shutout in the top of the fourth when Addi Dillow doubled to center field. Autumn Thompson was driven in with ease after successfully stealing third base, 6-1.

In the top of the fifth, WVSU rallied with two outs to cut the deficit to two runs. Kasey Murphy doubled to left center to bring Emma Ruth home, 6-2. Thompson was then able to score from third base on a passed ball, 6-3. Emma Pauley then batted in Murphy with a single to left field, 6-4, before the third out was finally recorded.

In the sixth and seventh innings, only one Yellow Jacket reached base with a single to prevent the comeback from going any further.

Game 3: Charleston 4, West Virginia State 0, Final/7

Charleston crept out in front with a run scored on a ground out in the second inning, 1-0. The Golden Eagles then tacked on two more runs, both unearned, in the fourth inning. A single scored runners from second and third after an error extended the inning, 3-0. An RBI-single in the fifth inning then increased the deficit to four runs, 4-0. That turned out to be the final score.
The Yellow Jackets never really threatened to score from the first to the last inning. They collected a total of four hits, all of which were singles. Each hit came in a separate inning.

Autumn Hall was solid in the circle despite not receiving any run support. Only two of the runs scored against her were earned.

Autumn Thompson went 5-for-7 (.714) with two runs scored in the doubleheader to lead the Yellow Jackets in hits.
