WVSU softball shuts out Falcons in game one, drops game two

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team earned a split against the second place team in the North Division of the Mountain East, the Notre Dame College Falcons. WVSU shut out the potent offense of the Falcons in game one, while giving up a six-spot in the fifth inning of game two.

Post-game records:
WVSU: 12-23 (6-16 MEC)
NDC: 24-16 (14-8 MEC)

Game one: WVSU 2, NDC 0
Through the first three innings, NDC accumulated three hits while WVSU's Emma Pauley singled in the second inning and Emma Ruth singled in the third. Both were left stranded. NDC had runners on first and second with no one out, then a fielder's choice had runners on the corners with one out. Another fielder's choice threw the runner out trying to score and a deep flyout to left field quashed the NDC opportunity.

Autumn Thompson doubled to lead off the bottom of the fourth, and was on third with two out, but was left on when Addi Dillow flew to left field.

NDC hit a two out single in the top of the fifth, but got no further.

Emma Ruth hit a screamer down the right field line that went all the way to the right field corner in the bottom of the fifth, scoring Avery Contreras and putting herself on third with a triple. Emele Clark then put a base hit over the third baseman's head to score Ruth.

NDC had runners on second in both the sixth and seventh innings, but couldn't advance any further in either inning.

Ruth and Pauley both had two hits in the contest. Kasey Murphy fanned three and a walk to pick up her seventh win of the season.

Game two: NDC 6, WVSU 1
NDC had the bases loaded with one out in the top of the third inning, but a force at home and a strikeout preserved the scoreless game.

WVSU took control in the bottom of the fourth inning when Kasey Murphy hit a blooper into right field that scored Thompson from second base.

NDC had runners on first and second with two outs in the top of the fifth, but plated one on a single, two on an error and three on a homer over the left field wall.

State didn't get a hit for the rest of the game, but an error in the fifth and an error in the seventh allowed base runners, but they were stranded at first.

Thompson, Pauley, and Murphy had the only hits in the game for WVSU. Autumn Hill got the start and fanned one in the loss. She made way for Thompson who got the last out in the fifth via strikeout and surrendered the only earned run for the Yellow Jackets. Murphy then pitched the last two innings, striking out two.
