Offensive explosion nets split with Battlers

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The fans at Lady Jackets Field that showed up early in the morning were treated to an entertaining doubleheader on Sunday as Alderson Broaddus and West Virginia State combined for 30 runs and 48 hits through the two games. When the smoke cleared, AB rallied in the sixth inning to capture game one, while WVSU took control in the first inning and didn't trail the rest of the way of game two.

Post Game Records
WVSU: 13-24 (7-17 MEC)
Alderson Broaddus: 14-30 (7-17 MEC)

Game 1 - AB 7, WVSU 4
AB plated two runs in the first inning on the back of three walks, a double, and a single. WVSU starter pitched just one-third of an inning prior to making way for eventual pitcher-of-record Autumn Thompson. Thompson recorded outs in the next two at-bats to freeze the score.

Emma Ruth hit a triple to lead off the bottom half of the inning, then scored when Autumn Thompson sent a base hit to second base, 2-1.

Neither team scored in the second, third, fourth, or fifth innings. WVSU plated three runs to take the lead in the bottom of the sixth inning with a walk by Kasey Murphy, an RBI single by Autumn Hall, a bunt single by Addi Dillow, an RBI bunt single by Kerigan Moore, and an RBI double by Emma Ruth, 4-2.

AB took the lead back in the top of the seventh with two RBI singles, a sac fly, and a two-RBI single.

Chelsea Thompson hit a two-out single, but was stranded at first when the game ended.

Emele Clark went 3-for-4 and Kasey Murphy hit 2-for-3 with a run. Emma Ruth went 2-for-4 with a double and a triple. Thompson fanned two in the loss.

Game 2 - WVSU 11, AB 8
Alderson Broaddus again opened the scoring in the top of the first, scoring three runs. Clark walked and Chelsea Thompson hit a single, moving Clark to third. Thompson then hit an RBI single to score Clark. Two batters later, Emma Pauley hit a bases-loaded, bases-clearing double to re-take the lead, scoring both Thompson sisters and Murphy, 4-3.

AB tied it in the top of the second with an RBI single. In the bottom of the second, Pauley again came through with a two-RBI hit that scored Chelsea Thompson and Clark, 6-4. Dillow then blasted a double into left-center that scored Pauley and Murphy, 8-4.

AB trimmed the lead once more in the top of the third, 8-5. WVSU matched it in the bottom half with an RBI single by Autumn Thompson to score Clark, 9-5.

In the top of the fourth, AB hit a two-RBI double to cut the lead in half, 9-7. Emma Ruth matched AB's double with a two-RBI double down the left field line to re-extend the lead to four runs, 11-7.

AB finished the scoring with an RBI double in the top of the fifth, 11-8. State went down in order in the fifth and sixth while AB stranded a runner in the sixth then went one, two, three in the seventh.

State had 11 base-hits in the game. Clarke, Autumn Thompson, and Pauley all had a multi-hit game. Clarke scored thrice. Chelsea Thompson and Kasey Murphy both scored twice.

Kasey Murphy had the win in relief, throwing three-and-two-thirds innings with a strikeout and three hits. WVSU struggled on defense, however, with only four of AB's eight runs being earned due to the five errors committed.
