Yellow Jackets fall to Wesleyan Friday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team dropped a doubleheader against the West Virginia Wesleyan Bobcats on Friday afternoon. The Bobcats came into the twinbill as the team with the second-best record in the conference. Key defensive errors by the Yellow Jackets extended innings resulting in just four of the 13 runs allowed over the two games being earned.

Game 1 - WVWC 7, WVSU 5
Wesleyan struck first in the bottom of the first inning with a hit by pitch followed by a double put Wesleyan on the scoreboard first.

State answered in the bottom half of the inning when Emma Ruth tee'd off on the second pitch of the half-inning and sent it flying over the outfield wall for her first homer of the season, 1-1. Emele Clark got on base in the very next at-bat when the first baseman dropped a putout attempt allowing Clark to get all the way to third. Thompson hit a sac fly in the next at-bat to score Clark, 2-1.

A throwing error and double allowed Wesleyan to regain the lead in the top of the second inning. A two-RBI single in the fourth and another throwing error in the top of the fifth extended the Bobcat lead, 6-2.

An Autumn Thompson single in the bottom half of the inning cued up Kasey Murphy to send her eighth screamer of the season over the left field wall to rejuvenate the Yellow Jackets and cut the lead in half, 6-4.

Wesleyan added a run in the top of the sixth, 7-4. A bobble by the shortstop attempting to retire Murphy allowed another WVSU run to score, but State's attempt at a rally was shut down by Wesleyan striking out the side in the bottom of the seventh.

Game 2 - WVWC 6, WVSU 2
Wesleyan again struck in the top half of the first inning on an RBI groundout then plated two more in the third on a groundout and a comebacker base hit, 3-0.

State's lone runs in the game came in the bottom of the third inning when Kasey Murphy hit the only extra-base hit of the game for State, a two-RBI shot to the right-center field wall that scored Thompson and Clark.

The Bobcats scored two more in the fifth, though the damage was limited by a double play. They scored one final time in the sixth, 6-2. State went down in order in the seventh to seal the sweep.
