Yellow Jackets shutout Wesleyan twice on Saturday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (16-11, 11-3 MEC) picked up two shutout victories against West Virginia Wesleyan (7-20, 3-11 MEC) on Friday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets won the first game, 5-0, before claiming the second game, 7-0.

Game 1: West Virginia State 5, West Virginia Wesleyan 0, Final/7

Senior hurler Tyler Lafferty (3-1) tossed a complete game shutout to drop his ERA to 1.00 on the season. He gave up a total of two hits, a pair of singles to the same batter, with only one base on balls and six strikeouts.

All five of State's runs were scored in the bottom of the second. Michael Bittinger's single to left field scored Nathan Paulsen from second, 1-0. A throwing error by the left fielder on the hit allowed Bittinger to advance to second and William Glick to move over to third. Michael Stone then singled up the middle to clear the bases, 3-0. Ryan Kay drove in Stone later on with a single to center before Tyler Overaitis drove in another run with a double to right center, 5-0.

Game 2: West Virginia State 7, West Virginia Wesleyan 0, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets blanked Wesleyan again in the second game of the afternoon. Chase Norris (3-2) got the start and threw five scoreless innings with five strikeouts. Reliever Camron Lewis entered the game in the fifth inning and only allowed one baserunner on a hit by pitch to pick up his first save of the season.

Mike Huber broke the deadlock in the bottom of the third with an RBI-single, 1-0. The Yellow Jackets then tacked on two more runs in the bottom of the fourth. Both Stone and Kay hit solo home runs to left field, 3-0.

In the bottom of the sixth, State added four runs to its tally. A sacrifice fly by Kyle Waters scored the first run of the inning, 4-0. The Bobcats then used their first relief pitcher of the day shortly thereafter. Overaitis was the first batter he faced. State's man behind the dish singled through the right side of the infield to score one, 5-0. Then, after Connor Fizer doubled to the gap in right center, Paulsen singled through the left side of the infield to score two, 7-0.
