WVSU completes four-game sweep of Wesleyan on Saturday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (18-11, 13-3 MEC) swept West Virginia Wesleyan (7-22, 3-13 MEC) for the second time on Saturday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets trailed the Bobcats early on in both games, but came back to win them both.

Game 1: West Virginia State 13, West Virginia Wesleyan 4, Final/7

The Yellow Jackets picked up two runs in the first inning to get off to a good start. After leadoff batter Kyle Waters drew a walk, Ryan Kay doubled to left center to bring him home, 1-0. Kay was then able to score on an error made by the right fielder, 2-0.

The tables turned quickly in the top of the third when the Bobcats scored three runs to take the lead. An RBI-double followed by two RBI-singles gave Wesleyan its first lead since the start of the series on Friday, 3-2.

State then regained the lead in the bottom of the third with a six-run inning. Three-run home runs by both Nathan Paulsen and Michael Stone put WVSU back in front, 8-3. Paulsen pulled his eighth blast of the season to left field while Stone went opposite to right field for his fourth long ball of the season.

The Yellow Jackets tacked on two more runs in the fourth inning. Mike Huber singled into center field to bring in Tyler Overaitis from third base. A throwing error made by the center fielder on the hit then allowed Paulsen to touch home plate, 10-3.

A solo shot by the Bobcats to lead off the fifth inning made no difference in the game's result, but brought them back to within six runs, 10-4.

State added three insurance runs in the bottom of the sixth. Two fielding errors and a sacrifice fly by William Glick brought the three runs across, 13-4.

Riley Vadasz relieved starter Colin Bryant in the top of the seventh after Bryant's pitch count topped 100 in the previous inning. Vadasz retired the side in order to end the contest.

Game 2: West Virginia State 7, West Virginia Wesleyan 2, Final/7

State's bats took a while to get going in the second game of the afternoon as the Bobcats crept out in front. Wesleyan's starting pitcher, Hunter Eplin, held WVSU scoreless through the first three innings. Meanwhile, Cole Shearer of the Bobcats hit solo homers in the top of the second and fourth innings, 2-0.

With two outs in the bottom of the fourth, the Yellow Jackets rallied to give starting pitcher Nick Loftis a chance to earn his fourth win of the year. Glick drove in a run with a single to center, 2-1. Michael Bittinger then tied the score with a single to right, 2-2. Stone then gave his team the lead with a double to left that brought both Glick and Bittinger around, 4-2.
A pair of insurance runs were scored in the bottom of the fifth. Connor Fizer doubled to right to score one of the runs, 5-2. Huber launched a solo shot over the fence in the left field to score the second run, 6-2.

Loftis recorded the first two outs in the top of the sixth before closer Foster Conis came in to get the third out. State then scored one more run in the bottom of the sixth with another solo shot, 7-2. Waters hit the round tripper to left field this time.

Conis forced three ground outs in the top of the seventh to close out the game.
