Baseball falls to Cedarville in non-conference clash

CEDARVILLE, Ohio – West Virginia State baseball (18-12, 13-3 MEC) fell to Cedarville (9-24, 4-12 GMAC) by a final score of 10-3 on Tuesday afternoon at Yellow Jacket Field. This was the second nine-inning game played between the two non-conference opponents this season. Both contests were won by the Yellow Jackets of Cedarville.

Cedarville took an early lead with a solo home run to lead off the bottom of the first, 1-0, before tacking on four more runs in the bottom of the fourth. With the bases juiced, a single to center field scored two, 3-0. A wild pitch coupled with a throwing error then allowed two more runs to come across the plate, 5-0.

The first baserunner of the game for State came in the top of the fifth. Nathan Paulsen killed the no-hitter with a single into right field. A double play and a pop out followed to end the half inning.

CU added three runs to its tally in the bottom of the fifth. A double to left center scored one run before a single to the same gap scored two runs, 8-0.

Michael Stone killed the shutout in the top of the sixth with a solo shot to left center, 8-1. In the top of the seventh, three consecutive walks loaded the bases for State. One run was scored when Michael Bittinger drew a walk with the bases still juiced, 8-2. A pitching change was made afterwards to get the last two outs without any further damage.

Back-to-back doubles from Kyle Waters and then Ryan Kay scored a third run for WVSU, 8-3, in the top of the eighth. Kay was then left stranded at second base.

Cedarville registered a pair of insurance runs in the bottom of the eighth. A single through the left side of the infield scored one of the runs while a wild pitch with a baserunner on third scored the other run, 10-3.

The side was retired in order in the top of the ninth to bring the game to its conclusion.

State cycled through eight pitchers, including starter Ethen Riggs who was effective in three innings on the mound. The only hit he gave up was the solo dinger in the first inning.

WVSU will travel to Glenville State next for a four-game weekend series beginning on Saturday, April 15th. Both Saturday's and Sunday's doubleheaders are scheduled to start at 1:00 p.m.
