State picks up a pair of wins at Glenville with stellar pitching

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (20-12, 15-3 MEC) took two games from Glenville State (14-21, 7-11 MEC) on Saturday afternoon at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. The Yellow Jackets won the first game comfortably, 9-1, before they shutout Glenville in the second game, 3-0.

Game 1: West Virginia State 9, Glenville State 1, Final/7

Tyler Lafferty got the start in game one and earned his fourth win of the season. He got himself in trouble early with a pair of walks to begin the bottom of the first inning. A single through the right side of the infield then allowed Glenville's leadoff batter to score from second, 1-0. Lafferty was able to get out of the inning without any further damage by producing three straight outs.

He kept the Pioneers at bay for the remainder of his time on the mound and received the run support he needed in the top of the fourth. After Ryan Kay drew a walk, Tyler Overaitis homered to right field to give the Yellow Jackets the lead, 2-1.

WVSU then piled on the runs in the top of the fifth and never looked back. A sacrifice fly by Kay scored the first run of the six-run half inning, 3-1. Overaitis's single into center field coupled with an error then scored two more runs, 5-1. Nathan Paulsen drove in another run with a single to left field, 6-1, before a costly error by Glenville's second baseman allowed two more runs to score, 8-1.

The Yellow Jackets added one more run to their tally in the top of the sixth on a ground out, 9-1. In the bottom of the sixth, Camron Lewis relieved Lafferty to finish out the game. Lewis walked two Pioneers, but did not give up a hit in two full innings to maintain the large margin of victory.

Lafferty struck out nine batters to tie his career high.

Game 2: West Virginia State 3, Glenville State 0, Final/7

Lefty starter Chase Norris dominated in the second game of the afternoon. He did not allow a hit in 5.1 innings pitched.

Kyle Waters led off the contest by drawing a walk. He made his way over to third base on good baserunning before Overaitis drove him in with a ground out, 1-0.

Norris was pulled in the bottom of the sixth while throwing a no-hitter. He walked the first batter of the half inning before a sacrifice bunt moved the tying-run into scoring position. Foster Conis then was brought in to pitch for WVSU. He produced two quick outs to leave one stranded.

William Glick led off the top of the seventh with a round tripper to left field, 2-0. Michael Stone followed up one out later with his own four bagger to left field, 3-0.

After placing runners on first and second with one out in the bottom of the seventh, Conis earned the save by forcing a ground ball to Waters that he turned into a double play.
