Yellow Jackets split with Glenville on a rainy Sunday

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (21-13, 16-4 MEC) split with Glenville State (15-22, 8-12 MEC) on a rainy Sunday at the Sue Morris Sports Complex. Both games went to extra innings and saw lead changes. The Pioneers stole the first game, 8-7, before the Yellow Jackets persevered in the second game, 6-4.

Game 1: Glenville State 8, West Virginia State 7, Final/8

The first game of the afternoon was a whirlwind. Glenville loaded the bases in the bottom of the first, but only scored one run off an RBI-single, 1-0. The Pioneers scored another run off another RBI-single in the bottom of the second, 2-0, before loading the bases again. Again, only the one run came across despite the bases being juiced.

After a scoreless third inning, Mike Huber put the Yellow Jackets on the scoreboard with a solo shot over the center field fence in the top of the fourth, 2-1. The one-run deficit did not last long as Glenville's Zach Bayor hit a solo homer in the bottom of the fourth, 3-1.

The score remained unchanged until the top of the sixth when WVSU went on a tear. After Nathan Paulsen reached base on an error by the third baseman, Huber crushed his second home run of the game to tie the score, 3-3. In the next at bat, William Glick homered to give the Yellow Jackets the lead for the first time, 4-3.

After the side was retired in order in the bottom of the sixth, West Virginia State picked up an insurance run in the top of the seventh. Connor Fizer singled up the middle to drive in Tyler Overaitis from second base, 5-3. Another insurance run almost scored later in the half inning. Fizer tried to reach home plate from second off Glick's base hit, but was thrown out by the center fielder.

With two outs and runners on second and third in the bottom of the seventh, a single into left field cleared the bases, 5-5. A ground out to the pitcher then sent the game into extra innings.

In the top of the eighth, the Yellow Jackets went up by two runs. Ryan Kay drove in the go-ahead run with a single up the middle, 6-5. A balk then scored Kyle Waters from third base, 7-5.

A sacrifice fly in the bottom of the eighth scored a run for the Pioneers and resulted in the second out of the half inning, 7-6. A walk then loaded bases. The next two batters also drew walks to score the tying run and the game-winning run, 8-7.

Game 2: West Virginia State 6, Glenville State 4, Final/9

In the second game of the afternoon, Glenville went in front in the bottom of the third. A triple was followed by a sacrifice fly to score the go-ahead run, 1-0.

West Virginia State left the bases juiced in the top of the first before leaving two stranded in the top of the second. No Yellow Jackets reached base in the third and fourth innings.

A rain delay halted the action after the Pioneers finished taking their cuts in the bottom of the fourth. No runs were scored by either team in the fifth inning when play resumed.

In the top of the sixth, Aidan Paulsen tied the score after pinch running and reaching home on a wild pitch, 1-1. Kyle Waters then drove in the go-ahead run with a single to left field, 2-1. An error by the pitcher allowed a third run to score in the half inning, 3-1.

The Pioneers were able to tie the score in the bottom of the sixth. A leadoff solo homer cut the lead to one run, 3-2. An RBI-single later in the inning knotted the score at 3-apiece.

A scoreless seventh inning resulted in extra innings for the second time of the day. Linden Carey, who replaced starter Nick Loftis after the score was tied up in the bottom of the sixth, recorded three-straight strikeouts in the bottom of the seventh.

In the top of the ninth, Huber hit his third home run of the day with two men on to give WVSU a three-run cushion, 6-3. Glenville got one run back in the bottom of the ninth, but reliever Tyrus Baumgardner ensured that the Pioneers were halted there.

Huber went 3-for-7 with three homers, six runs batted in and three runs scored on the day.
