State's late comeback falls short at Salem

SALEM, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (14-11, 9-3 MEC) was edged by Salem (12-18) by a final score of 6-5 on Tuesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets' three runs in the top of the ninth came up just short of tying the score.

The Tigers gained a sizable advantage in the bottom of the second by putting up four runs. With the bases loaded, a single scored the first two runs of the game, 2-0. Another single with the bases loaded later in the inning scored another run, 3-0. The final run of the inning was scored when the batter was hit by a pitch with the bases juiced, 4-0.

State cut Salem's lead in half with a run scored in each of the fourth and fifth innings. With the bases loaded in the top of the fourth, Ethan Spolarich put the ball in play to bring Michael Stone home, 4-1. In the top of the fifth, Nathan Paulsen drove in Mike Huber from third base with a single, 4-2.

Ethen Riggs came in to pitch for WVSU in the third and held the Tigers scoreless for 3.1 innings. He struck out six and gave up only two hits.

Salem was able to extend its lead in the bottom of the eighth, crucially, by tacking on two runs. A two-run homerun increased the deficit to four, 6-2.

In the top of the ninth, the game nearly ended when Tyler Overaitis pinch hit and drilled a ball down the first base line. The first baseman stepped on the bag and threw to second for a tag out, which would have been the third out. The call was overturned when Overaitis's ground ball was deemed foul. He then reached base with a single before the second out of the inning. Huber was up next. He belted a screamer over the left field fence to bring the Yellow Jackets back to within one run, 6-5. The final out of the contest came in the next at bat.

Huber went 3-for-5 in the game with a homerun, two doubles, three runs batted in and two runs scored.

State will come back home to play West Virginia Wesleyan in a doubleheader on Friday, April 7th. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
