State falls twice to Concord on Friday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (21-16, 16-6 MEC) dropped both games to Concord (24-14, 20-2 MEC) in a doubleheader played on Friday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets were edged, 3-2, in the first game before they fell behind late to the Mountain Lions in the second game, 6-2.

Game 1: Concord 3, West Virginia State 2, Final/7

The Mountain Lions struck first in game one. With the bases loaded in the top of the second, they singled to right field to drive in the first run of the game, 1-0. No further damage was done as a strikeout and fly out followed for the second and third outs.

Concord tacked on two more runs in the top of the third with a homer to left center with one man on base, 3-0.

State nearly caught all the way back up in the bottom of the third. Michael Stone singled up the middle before Kyle Waters doubled to right field. Ryan Kay then singled through the left side of the infield to score both baserunners, 3-2.

After allowing the two runs in the bottom of the third, Concord's Andrew Neff settled and kept the Yellow Jackets at bay for the remainder of the contest. Stone was the only Yellow Jacket to reach base after the third inning with singles in the bottom of the fifth and seventh. He went 3-for-3 in the game.

Game 2: Concord 6, West Virginia State 2, Final/7

WVSU struck first in game two. William Glick gave State the lead in the bottom of the second with a sacrifice fly that scored Nathan Paulsen from third, 1-0. The Yellow Jackets then increased their lead to two runs in the third inning when Tyler Overaitis singled to right field and brought Kyle Waters home, 2-0.

Stater Chase Norris tossed a perfect game through four innings. After recording the first out in the top of the fifth, he walked a batter before giving up a single. A second base on balls followed to load the bases. A single through the left side of the infield then scored two to tie the score, 2-2.

After a scoreless sixth inning, Concord rallied in the top of the seventh to take the lead for good. Back-to-back doubles scored three runs before an RBI-single scored a fourth run, 6-2.

The side was retired in order in the bottom of the seventh to bring the game to its conclusion.
