Yellow Jackets walk-off twice versus Concord on Sunday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (23-6, 18-6 MEC) won both games of a doubleheader against Concord (24-16, 20-4 MEC) on Sunday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the bottom of the seventh to beat Concord, 3-2, in the first game before they won the second game, 6-5, with a walk-off home run in the seventh.

Game 1: West Virginia State 3, Concord 2, Final/7

Starting pitcher Colin Bryant was solid through five innings to give his team a fighting chance. His mistakes were limited. He gave up a solo homer with two outs in the top of the third, 1-0.

In the top of the fourth, Bryant got himself into a jam by loading the bases with only one out. An unearned run was scored against him on a throwing error, 2-0, before he got out of the jam with a ground ball that was turned into a double play.

Tyrus Baumgardner was the next State pitcher to get out of a jam. He entered the game with two men on and one out in the top of the sixth. He gave up a single to load the bases again before he recorded two outs with foul and fly balls.

Center fielder Nathan Paulsen made the play of the game in the top of the seventh. On a single up the middle, the runner on second tried to score. Paulsen nailed him at the plate with a dart for the third out.

William Glick finally sparked the WVSU offense in the bottom of the seventh with a leadoff jack over the fence in right field, 2-1. Two quick outs followed before Michael Bittinger faced two strikes in the count. He ended up drawing a walk to keep the game alive. Kyle Waters then singled through the left side of the infield to move Bittinger all the way to third base. Ryan Kay was next up to bat and tied the score, 2-2, with a single up the middle that brought Bittinger home and placed Waters on second. Tyler Overaitis secured the victory with a walk-off single down the right field line that scored Waters, 3-2.

Game 2: West Virginia State 6, Concord 5, Final/7

The second game of the afternoon was a thriller from start to finish. State took an early lead in the bottom of the first when Waters was able to score on an error by the left fielder, 1-0.

In the top of the third, the Mountain Lions posted three runs to turn the tables. A single into center field allowed a baserunner to score from second, 1-1. On the throw to the plate, runners were able to advance to second and third. In the next at bat, another single into center field scored both runners on the bags, 3-1.

The lead for Concord was rapidly relinquished when the Yellow Jackets put up four runs in the bottom of the third. After two quick outs to start the half inning, Connor Fizer sparked a rally with a monster home run to left center, 3-2. A passed ball scored the tying run, 3-3, before Michael Stone's double up against the right field fence scored the go-ahead run, 4-3. Paulsen then drove in an insurance run with a single through the left side of the infield, 5-3.

Following a scoreless fourth inning, CU reset the game with two runs in the top of the fifth. An RBI-double scored the first run, 5-4. A pair of wild pitches, one being on a strikeout, then allowed the second run to come across the plate, 5-5.

Reliever Camron Lewis entered the game in the sixth and only gave up one hit to keep the score locked through two full innings. Overaitis then stepped up to the plate in the bottom of the seventh and launched a dinger to right field for his second consecutive walk-off hit.
