WVSU rallies in top of the ninth to knock off Wilberforce

XENIA, Ohio – The West Virginia State University baseball team (24-16, 18-6 MEC) came back to beat Wilberforce (5-34, 1-21 CAC) in a nine-inning game played at Athletes in Action Sports Complex on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets rallied in the top of the ninth, scoring six runs, to come out on top.

The Bulldogs gained the lead first when they scored on an error, 1-0, in the bottom of the third.

WVSU equalized in the top of the fourth when Aidan Paulsen drove in his brother, Nathan Paulsen, with a single into center field, 1-1. Nate reached base with a double before he advanced to third on a ground out.

The game unraveled for State in the bottom of the fourth when Wilberforce tacked on four runs. A single up the middle scored two runs, 3-1, before a sacrifice fly to deep left field scored runners from second and third, 5-1. Three out of the four runs scored in the half inning were unearned.

The Yellow Jackets cut into the deficit in the top of the seventh when Ryan Kay homered to left field with Aidan on base, 5-3. Paulsen reached base on a bunt single.

With the game on the line in the top of the ninth, WVSU exploded with a six-run inning. Before the first out was recorded, Tyler Overaitis drove Michael Bittinger in with a double to right before Connor Fizer tied the score by bringing Kay in with a single through the left side, 5-5. Overaitis then scored the go-ahead run on Evan Weaver's sacrifice bunt, 6-5. Fizer was also able to score when an error was made by Wilberforce's third baseman, 7-5. A double to center by Ethan Spolarich then added two more insurance runs, 9-5, going into the bottom of the ninth.

Freshman pitcher Brian Lingenfelter retired the side in order in the final half inning. He threw the last four innings of the game and gave up no runs on one hit to earn the first win of his collegiate career.

The Yellow Jackets will head to Davis & Elkins tomorrow for a doubleheader at 1 p.m. next.
