Baseball sweeps D&E with 25 runs on 25 hits

ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia State baseball (25-16, 20-6 MEC) swept Davis & Elkins (7-37, 6-20 MEC) in a doubleheader played on Thursday afternoon at Harpertown Field. The Yellow Jackets ran away with game one, 16-2, before they shut out the Senators in game two, 9-0.

Game 1: West Virginia State 16, Davis & Elkins 2, Final/7

Linden Carey (3-0) got the start for the Yellow Jackets in the first game of the afternoon. Typically a reliever, he proved that he has the stamina for a starting role. In 5.1 innings pitched, he held D&E scoreless while only giving up four hits with five strikeouts.

State's bats gave him plenty of run support for his third win of the season. The Yellow Jackets scored first in the top of the third with three runs in the inning. Tyler Overaitis drove in two runs with a single, 2-0, before William Glick drove in one run with another single, 3-0.

WVSU tacked on three more runs in the top of the fifth with one swing of the bat. Nathan Paulsen did the honors by belting a no-doubter with two men on base, 6-0.

The game then became a no-doubter when State posted 10 runs in the sixth inning, 16-0. Overaitis sparked the rally by leading off the inning with a solo shot. The runs then piled up as the Yellow Jackets went through their lineup once before a pitching change was made. Five more batters got a crack after the pitching change as four more runs were scored.

In the bottom of the seventh, the Senators scored twice on an RBI-double and a ground out to give the game its final score, 16-2.

Game 2: West Virginia State 9, Davis & Elkins 0, Final/7

Three State pitchers combined for a shutout in the second game of the afternoon. Another reliever, Riley Vadasz got the start and only allowed two hits through four innings. Foster Conis did not give up a hit in his two innings pitched before Camron Lewis finished the game without allowing a hit.

WVSU picked up two runs in each of the second and third innings. Nate Paulsen drove in and scored a run in the second, 2-0. In the third, Overaitis drove in and scored a run, 4-0.

Another run was added to State's tally in the fourth when Nate Paulsen homered with no one on base, 5-0.

In the fifth, four runs were tacked on to put the game out of reach for the Senators. Mike Huber drew a walk with the bases loaded, 6-0. A wild pitch scored the next run, 7-0. A sacrifice fly by William Glick accounted for the third run of the half inning, 8-0. Nate Paulsen brought in the last run with an RBI-single, 9-0.

Center fielder Nate Paulsen had one of the best days of his collegiate career. He went 7-for-8 with two home runs, two doubles, seven runs batted in and four runs scored.
