Yellow Jackets rally in game one, fall short in game two Saturday

ELKINS, W.Va. – West Virginia State's baseball team (27-17, 21-7 MEC) took 3-of-4 from the Davis & Elkins College Senators (8-38, 7-21 MEC) in their series over the weekend after Saturday's split. The Jackets scored seven runs in the final two innings of game one to rally from a 5-1 deficit going into the top of the sixth and take game one 8-5 before eventually falling in game two after taking a 1-0 lead in the fourth inning.

Game one: WVSU 8, D&E 5; Final/7
An RBI double for Davis & Elkins in the bottom of the first started the scoring, 1-0. Conor Fizer came up to bat in the top of the second and tied the game with his first of two home runs on the day, 1-1. The Senators then took the lead with a run in the bottom of the second and three in the bottom of the third. All three runs in the bottom of the third were unearned.

The Jacket bats got hot in the late stages of the game with Fizer knocking in his second RBI of the game, scoring Kyle Waters. A sac fly by Will Glick scored Ryan Kay and a 2 RBI single by Michael Bittinger scored Fizer and Mike Huber, tying the game at 5-all.

Tyler Overaitis knocked in the game-winning run in the top of the seventh, scoring Kay, but Fizer wasn't done as he belted his second jack of the game to knock in Overaitis, 8-5. D&E got a lead-off walk in the bottom of the seventh and managed to get over to second on a wild pitch, but a flyout and two strikeouts quashed any hope of a comeback by the Senators.

Chase Norris got the win in relief, pitching four innings, fanning four and walking three, but only allowed one hit, a single to the first batter he faced in the bottom of the fourth inning.

Game two: D&E 4, WVSU 1; Final/7
The two teams combined for a total of 13 strikeouts between them with WVSU pitching accounting for five of them. State got their first base hit of the game in the top of the fourth, a one-out single by Nathan Paulsen. Paulsen's single was followed by a Bittinger single and a double steal putting runners on second and third for Aidan Paulsen. The younger Paulsen hit a sac fly to score his brother, WVSU's lone run of the game.

D&E answered in the bottom of the inning with a lead-off triple and RBI groundout to tie the game at 1-apiece.

State's other two hits came in the top of the sixth when Nate Paulsen and Bittinger hit back-to-back base hits again, this time with two outs. They were stranded at first and third when Aidan Paulsen popped to first.

A three-run homer in the bottom of the sixth gave the Senators the lead, and the Jackets went down in order in the top of the seventh.
