WVSU Softball splits with Mountain Lions in Athens

ATHENS, W.Va. – West Virginia State allowed Concord to score five runs in each game of Saturday's doubleheader, winning game one 8-5, then falling in game two 5-0. Kasey Murphy picked up her sixth win of the season, while Autumn Thompson dropped her fifth decision.

Game one: WVSU 8, Concord 5
Emma Ruth got aboard on a leadoff single then made it to third when Emele Clark got aboard on a fielding error. Murphy hit a sac fly to score Ruth and Emma Pauley hit a double to center field, scoring Clark, 2-0. Concord got one back in the bottom half of the first. 

Neither team scored in the second inning. Clark bunted her way on base in the third inning, stole second, then scored when Thompson sent a shot into left center field, putting her on second and scoring Clark. Thompson nearly scored in the next at bat, but she was thrown out at the plate, 3-1.

Concord tied it up in the bottom of the third, 3-3. Again, neither team could get on the scoreboard in the fourth inning. Clarked earned a one-out walk in the top of the fifth, followed by a Kasey Murphy shot over the fence, scoring herself and Clark, 5-3. A Pauley plunk, Addi Dillow single, and Avery Contreras RBI double made the score 6-3. Concord again answered in the home half with a run, 6-4.

Thompson hit a sac fly to score Kerigan Moore, 7-4 in the sixth inning, and Autumn Hall got an RBI single to score Dillow in the top of the seventh, 8-4. Concord got a run back in the bottom of the seventh, but couldn't score again.

WVSU belted out 11 hits in the game. Murphy earned four strikeouts in the win. 

Game two: Concord 5, WVSU 0
Emele Clark got all the way to third after reaching on an error, stealing second, and advancing to third on a ground out, but she was left stranded. Concord scored four runs in the home half of the first inning to take an immediate 4-0 lead. 

State went down in order in the second and third innings. They had a runner at second in the fourth and fifth innings when the third out was recorded. Concord scored their fifth run on a sac fly in the fourth inning. The Jackets then went down in order in the sixth and seventh innings, settling for the split.

WVSU had just one hit in the game, a lead off single in the fifth inning by Autumn Hall. Thompson lasted just a third of an inning and faced five batters before being hooked. Kasey murphy threw two-and-two-thirds of no hit softball, striking out two and allowing three free passes on balls.

WVSU heads up Interstate 79 on Sunday, April 2 for their second meeting with Glenville State this season. Earlier this season the Yellow Jackets and Pioneers split a doubleheader, winning game one 5-3 then dropping game two, 4-6.
