WVSU Softball drops two in Glenville

GLENVILLE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's softball team wrapped up a difficult weekend of Mountain East Conference competition by getting swept by Glenville State on Sunday. Kasey Murphy and the Yellow Jacket defense allowed five runs in the fifth inning of game one, and only managed to get one hit in game two and allowed six runs in the penultimate inning of that game.

Post Game Records:
WVSU: 11-15 (5-8 MEC)
Glenville State: 14-14 (7-5 MEC)

Game one: Glenville State 6, WVSU 4
The game appeared to be a pitcher's duel through the first half of the game with just one Yellow Jacket over the minimum coming to the plate through the first three innings, a single by Autumn Thompson in the top of the first inning. Glenville State scored a run off of an RBI base hit in the bottom of the second.

Emele Clark led off the top of the fourth with a base hit and stolen base. She advanced to third when Thompson got aboard thanks to a Glenville State error. An RBI single by Murphy brough Clark in to tie the game up, 1-1. Thompson scored on the next at bat when Dillow sent a base hit through the left side of the infield. Emma Pauley lined out and pinch runner Jayde Baron scored on the tag-up. Avery Contreras got an RBI base hit to score Dillow, but was thrown out at second trying to stretch the single into a double, 4-1.

Glenville State answered in the bottom of the fifth with a five run inning, scoring all five runs on a triple bookended by singles. Thompson singled to lead off the sixth inning, but the next six batters were thrown out before reaching first base.

Thompson went 2-for-3 with a run. Murphy, Dillow, Pauley, and Contreras all had one RBI each. Murphy fanned six in the circle.

Game two: Glenville State 6, WVSU 2
State worked five walks in the game, eventually scoring two runs. The only base hit of the game came in the top of the first by Kasey Murphy. Both runs by WVSU came on passed balls, a run in the first and one in the seventh.

Three straight singles to lead off the bottom of the sixth inning chased Thompson and brought in Autumn Hall. Hall was only able to record one out, giving up two walks, a grand slam, and a double. Thompson came back into the circle to record the final two outs of the inning.

Chelsea Thompson worked a two-out walk in the seventh inning as a pinch hitter, but only Murphy was able to score.

Thompson fanned seven Pioneer batters in the losing effort.
