BLUEFIELD, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University women's tennis team (3-1, 1-0 MEC) won its third-straight match against Bluefield State (0-1) by a final score of 4-3 on Tuesday afternoon.

The Yellow Jackets started the match by claiming the doubles point. Junior Tuva Wallin and freshman Amanda Menendez Thomasson cruised to victory at No. 1 doubles, 6-2. Senior Maya Haidari and sophomore Julia Daszkiewicz then teamed up to win at No. 2 doubles, 6-4. The No. 3 doubles match did not finish with the doubles point already in hand for WVSU.

The singles matches were much more interesting with lopsided victories going both ways and two of the matches going to a third set. Wallin and Thomasson won their matches at No. 1 and No. 3 singles, respectively, with ease. Wallin defeated Shreya Chakraborty (6-3, 6-1) while Thomasson defeated Paulina Moreno (6-0, 6-2) to pick up two more points for WVSU.

The No. 5 and No. 6 singles matches were both won in two sets by the Big Blue. With the score at 3-2 in favor of the Yellow Jackets, the No. 2 and No. 4 singles matches were left to decide which team would claim the victory.

Graduate student Chante Malo faced Adriana Torroba Tejada at No. 4 singles. Malo won the first set, 6-1, before Tejada claimed the second set, 6-3. The decisive third set was close with Tejada narrowly defeating Malo, 7-5, to tie the match at three points apiece.

The outcome of the No. 2 singles match became pivotal. Senior Maya Haidari was up against Juliana Jimenez of Bluefield State. Jimenez won the first set, 7-5, to put pressure on Haidari in the second set. The second set then went to a tiebreaker which Haidari won, 7-3. In the match-deciding third set, Haidari came out on top, 6-3, to help her team to a 4-3 victory.
