State splits with Slippery Rock on Saturday

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (4-5) split a doubleheader with Slippery Rock (6-3) on Saturday afternoon at Cal Bailey Field. The Yellow Jackets took it on the chin, 25-0, in the first game before coming back to win the second game, 5-2.

Game 1: Slippery Rock 25, West Virginia State 0 (Final/7)

The Yellow Jackets faced the Rock's Devin Dunn on the mound in the first game. Dunn tossed a complete game shutout, allowing just three baserunners on three hits. Meanwhile, six of West Virginia State's pitchers gave up multiple runs in short appearances.

State went down 7-0 after three innings before a 15-run fifth inning by the Rock placed the game out of the reach. Three more runs were tacked on in the top of the seventh to give the contest its final score.

Sophomore Mike Huber went 2-for-3 with two singles and a stolen base. Freshman Evan Weaver collected the other base hit for the Yellow Jackets, which was the first of his collegiate career.

Game 2: West Virginia State 5, Slippery Rock 2 (Final/9)

The second game was scheduled for nine innings, which proved to be crucial for WVSU. The opening seven innings were a pitcher's duel between the game's starters.

Senior Tyler Lafferty was awarded the start for State. Typically a reliever, he showed that he can handle an increased workload. He struck out six in seven full innings on the mound while giving up only three hits. The one run scored against him was unearned.

Slippery Rock's Joey Purcell was also dominant in his seven innings pitched. He struck out nine while allowing just four hits. No runs were scored against him.

The Rock struck first in the top of the fifth with a sacrifice fly, 1-0. A throwing error allowed the baserunner on second to move over to third leading up to the at bat. Then in the top of the eighth, Slippery Rock added a second run with an RBI-single, 2-0.

In the next half inning, Purcell was pulled for reliever Tanner Esposito. Esposito walked Michael Stone to start the inning. Stone then stole second. Michael Bittinger reached base on a throwing error by the second baseman while Stone advanced to third. Ethan Spolarich then drove in Stone with an infield single, 2-1.

William Glick drew a walk after the first out of the inning to load the bases. The second out came next before sophomore Tyler Overaitis stepped up to the plate. He cleared the bases with a grand slam sent clear over the right field fence, 5-2.

Graduate student Foster Conis entered the game in the top of the ninth for the save opportunity.  He retired the side in order with a groundout followed by a pair of strikeouts.
