WVSU baseball falls to Slippery Rock in pitchers duel

CHARLESTON, W.Va. – West Virginia State's baseball team (4-6) fell to Slippery Rock (7-3) in the series deciding game on Sunday, 2-0. State managed to get six hits off of the Slippery Rock pitching staff and even loaded the bases in the bottom of the eighth, but five of the final six retired batters for the Yellow Jackets struck out.

The final game of the series was transplanted from Cal Bailey Field in Institute to Go-Mart Park in Charleston due to overnight and morning rain. Nick Loftis got the start and retired the first eight Slippery Rock batters. Ryan Kay hit a lead off single in the second inning but was stranded. Slippery Rock scored their first run in the top of the fifth inning. Ethan Spolarich hit a two-out single through the right side of the infield but was also stranded. A pop-up by Kyle Waters left him stranded. Slippery Rock scored again in the sixth inning.

In the eighth inning, Waters fought through a full-count and earned a walk, forcing Slippery Rock to pull the starter after 7 ⅔ innings. The first reliever gave up a first-pitch single to Tyler Overaitis, followed by a 3-1 walk to Mike Huber to load the bases. Slippery Rock hooked this reliever and Kay hit into a fielder's choice to leave the bases loaded. WVSU struck out three consecutive times in the bottom of the ninth to end the game with State on the wrong side of a 2-0 score.

Overaitis hit 2-for-4 and four other Yellow Jackets got one hit each. Nick Loftis was charged with the loss with six innings of work, striking out three batters. Colin Bryant came in relief for three innings and struck out five batters.
