Yellow Jackets rally late to defeat Salem

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – The West Virginia State University baseball team (5-6) rallied with two outs in the bottom of the ninth to defeat Salem (5-12) by a final score of 7-6 on Wednesday afternoon. The Yellow Jackets were down 6-3 to the Tigers before the start of the rally.

The first run of the game was walked in with the bases loaded in the top of the first, 1-0. Riley Vadasz then took over on the mound with the task of getting out of a one out, bases loaded jam. He completed his task with two quick outs.

The deficit grew in the top of the second with a two-run homerun by Salem, 3-0. Linden Carey came in to pitch not long after and prevented any further damage.

The Yellow Jackets responded in the bottom of the third with their own two-run dinger, 3-2. Ryan Kay launched a shot to left center after Kyle Waters reached base with a single.

The Tigers tacked on two easy runs in the fourth and fifth innings, 5-2. They scored on a passed ball in the fourth and on a double play in the fifth.

Kay drove in Waters for a second time in the bottom of the fifth, 5-3.  This time, Waters doubled to the left-center gap before Kay singled to left field.

With two outs in the top of the seventh, the Tigers used a pinch hitter to increase their lead to three runs, 6-3. Salem's Sam Schmitt doubled to the center field fence to bring in a baserunner from third.

Foster Conis entered the game to pitch in the top of the ninth after Tyrus Baumgardner held Salem scoreless in the eighth inning. Conis gave up a single before setting up a double play with a groundout. He then struck out the next batter swinging.

After two quick outs in the bottom of the ninth, Connor Fizer pinch hit and drew a walk to start the rally. Waters and Kay then both walked to load the bases. Tyler Overaitis took one for the team to cut the deficit to two, 6-4. Mike Huber drew another walk to bring another run across, 6-5.

A pitching change was made by the Tigers after their lead was cut to one run. Will Glick was left with the game on his shoulders after going 0-4 with two strikeouts. He proved to have a short memory and walked off with a double to right field.

State will begin conference play this weekend by hosting West Liberty on Saturday, March 18th. The first pitch is scheduled for 1 p.m.
