WVSU’s 9-run rally subdued by UNC-Pembroke

PEMBROKE, N.C. – West Virginia State's softball team scored nine runs in the final two innings of their season opener against Mountain East football foe, UNC-Pembroke, but a four-run bottom of the seventh put to bed the rally, and WVSU (0-1) fell to the Braves (1-0), 12-11.

UNC-Pembroke opened the scoring in the bottom of the second inning with a solo shot to left field, 1-0. State struck back in the top of the third with an Addie Dillow double that scored Emele Clark, 1-1. Kasey Murphy then scored Dillow two batters later with a single to center field, 2-1. Pembroke chased Autumn Thompson after hitting a double that re-tied the game. Williamstown, W.Va. native then entered the circle, but gave up three more runs in her collegiate debut, 5-2. Pembroke extended their lead in the fourth inning by two more, 7-2.

State started a huge rally in the sixth inning with a Kerrigan Moore double which scored Emma Pauley, a Clark single that scored Moore, and a UNC-Pembroke throwing error allowed Addi Dillow to reach safely and allowed Clark to score. Thompson walked, and Kasey Murphy singled in the next at-bat, scoring Dillow. Emma Ruth capped off the scoring in the inning with a single that scored both Kasey Murphy and Thompson, 8-7.

UNC-Pembroke answered with another solo jack to tie the game and set-up a one-inning bat-off.

In the seventh inning, Clark hit a one-out double to score Avery Contreras, and Dillow again induced a throwing error to score Jayde Baron. Thompson then hit a sac fly to score Clark, giving State a seemingly insurmountable three-run lead, 11-8. The Braves achieved the impossible and scored four runs in the bottom of the seventh to hand the Yellow Jackets the opening day loss.

Emele Clark went 3-for-4, scoring thrice and hitting two RBIs. Kasey Murphy hit 3-for-5, scoring once and hitting two RBIs. Kasey Murphy was charged with the loss, pitching one and a third innings, giving up four runs and striking out one.

The Yellow Jacket defense wasn't charged with an error in the game.
