Softball drops a pair of games on Saturday at UNCP Invitational

PEMBROKE, N.C. – The West Virginia State University softball team (0-3) dropped two games to Kutztown (1-0) and Tusculum (1-0) on Saturday afternoon at the UNCP Invitational. WVSU was defeated by KU, 9-1, before suffering a second defeat to TU, 9-0.

The Golden Bears and the Pioneers were both playing their first games of the season. Meanwhile, the Yellow Jackets were coming off their season opener in which 23 total runs were scored. The game lasted over three hours and ended around 8 p.m. the night before.

Game One: Kutztown 9, West Virginia State 1

State scored first against Kutztown with an RBI-single up the middle from Autumn Thompson. Thompson retired the side in order in the top of the first before bringing home Emele Clark from second base in the bottom of the first.

The Golden Bears equalized in the second inning by stealing home as a runner was caught trying to steal second base. They then tacked on four more runs in the third inning, scored on a sacrifice fly in the fourth and added three runs to their tally in the top of the fifth. The eight-run rule was enacted when WVSU failed to score in the bottom of the fifth.

Emma Ruth went 2-for-2 in the opening contest.

Game Two: Tusculum 9, West Virginia State 0

In the second game of the afternoon, the Yellow Jackets faced a tough pitcher in the circle. Tusculum's Emily Sappington. The senior southpaw threw five shutout innings while allowing two hits with eight strikeouts and no walks. Sappington transferred from Division I UConn after one season.

State's Kasey Murphy was able to notch a double off her in the top of the second. Ruth was the only other Yellow Jacket to reach base with a single through the right side of the infield in the top of the fifth. Sappington then struck out the next three batters to secure a 9-0 victory.
