Six Yellow Jackets finish in double-figures in win over NDC

INSTITUTE, W.Va. – West Virginia State's women's basketball team defeated the Notre Dame College Falcons (6-20, 5-15 MEC) on senior day, 115-67. WVSU (21-4, 16-4 MEC) converted 46 field goal attempts, one shy of the school record of 47 set in 2004, and the team collected 51 rebounds, just shy of their nation-leading average of 52.9.

Anysa Jordan picked up her fifth double-double on the season and led all scorers with a season-high 29 points and 12 rebounds while shooting an impressive 12-of-13 from the field. Shelby Harmeyer canned six triples and finished with 23 points. Alana Kramer scored 13 points in her final home game in a Yellow Jacket uniform, Imani Reid and Destiny Fields both contributed 11 points and rounding out the double-figure scorers was ZZ Russell with 10 points. Russell was one assist shy of an unconventional double-double.

WVSU and NDC swapped the lead on three consecutive trips between the seven-minute mark and the six-minute mark. Jordan was fouled and tied it up on the ensuing foul shot at 10-all. Reid then gave the Yellow Jackets the lead for good just after the under-five media timeout, 12-10. The Jackets finished off the frame on a 7-2 run capped by a Kramer and-one that she converted, 24-17.

State went on a 5-0 run midway through the second quarter with Emily Anthony, Latifat Olatunji, and Fields contributing to the run, 37-28. NDC broke that run with a mid-range jumper, but State then put up another run, this time 9-2 that finished with a Fortenberry block and a Kramer run-out layup. State finished the quarter with three straight layups, two by Jordan and one by Olatunji, to take an 18-point lead into the intermission.

Harmeyer, Jordan, and Kramer took over the third quarter, with Harmeyer stroking four treys, Kramer canning two long-distance shots, and Jordan hit two shots inside the paint. Russell added a third shot in the paint, extending the WVSU lead to 29 points, 78-49 with 4:27 to play in the quarter. The lead hit 31 prior to the end of the period, but a late NDC foul shot shrunk it to 30 at the buzzer, 86-56.

Natalya Sayles scored seven straight points in a little over a minute to get WVSU to 99 points and Harmeyer stroked two straight triples to break the century ceiling with 4:26 showing. State cruised the rest of the way to the 115-67 win.
